THE HISTORICAL FANTASY OF ESEK HOPKINS is The Haus of Glitter Dance Company 's activist dance opera, historical intervention, community ritual and intergenerational curriculum. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Since Dec 2019, The Haus of Glitter Dance Company has been living, healing, revolutionizing and creating in the former home of Esek Hopkins, commander of the slaveship Sally, thanks to our 2 year PARKIST Artist Residency with the Providence Parks Department + the Providence Dept of Art, Culture, + Tourism.

The Haus of Glitter Dance Company works through dance, to shift the energetic center of the universe towards Liberation. Our rehearsal process IS our community work. During our first year here in the park, we coordinated mutual aid of over $12,000 in direct covid-19 relief and created youth, elder and community service stipends. We also distributed teas, healing herbs, farm produce and groceries to our neighborhood and community in Providence, RI.

AND, you are supporting our work to disrupt the historical archives — to make it known in time and space that there are stories missing from the picture we’ve painted of Esek Hopkins; to remember that our daily lives are history in the making; to imagine what life would be like today if colonization or slavery never happened; to rehearse for a future that centers healing, care and community.

THE HISTORICAL FANTASY OF ESEK HOPKINS is a a celebration of our community AND a protest-demonstration against the system that tells us that the name and home of Esek Hopkins should continue to be preserved, commemorated and memorialized.

More information about our fiscal sponsor, P3: Partnership for Providence Parks: A public-private partnership with the city of Providence, Rhode Island, the Partnership for Providence parks provides fiscal sponsorship and grants for parks and park organizations in the city.

The College Hill Neighboorhood Association, CHNA, today announced the launch of their Save Prospect Terrace Park in conjunction with the Providence Parks Department. The campaign seeks donations for the 501(c)(3) non-profit Friends of Prospect Terrace Park fund established to restore and enhance the park by replacing walkways to bring the park into compliance with ADA standards, replacing worn benches, repairing the retaining wall and fences, opening views, improving the landscaping and adding interpretive signs explaining the fascinating history of the park.

“We would like to make walks in the park ADA compliant with curb cuts and reductions in the path grades. However even if we just wanted to repair the broken path and steps, we cannot without first making them ADA compliant to the maximum extent possible, making it a larger and more expensive project,” said Sara Bradford of Bradford Associates LLC, an award winning landscape architectural firm who has donated preliminary renovation plans for the park. “In addition, the retaining wall needs repointing and removal of damaging vegetation and animals, and the wrought iron fence pickets are rotted out and need to be replaced, but this work is not currently in the city budget.”

“Please contribute to the Save Prospect Terrace Park and help us revitalize this landmark park to its former glory.” said CHNA President Josh Eisen. “This sanctuary with spectacular overlook views of downtown Providence and the State Capitol building has fallen into disrepair. Without restoration the future for this stunning park is bleak, but city funds are not enough so we are asking you to donate what you can. Your support will help ignite this effort and let the city know the neighborhood highly values this beautiful greenspace and wants to make sure it shines for generations to come!”

CHNA is working closely with the Providence Parks Department and will have its funding managed through the Partnership for Providence Parks. Key in-kind construction services will be provided by the Parks Department Forestry Division. CHNA has completed preliminary landscape architectural drawings of the proposed work and plans to work with the Parks Department to develop the designs and prepare documents for bid and implementation once funds have been raised.

“Prospect Terrace is a land mark site.” said City of Providence Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson. “It’s centerpiece is the iconic statue of Roger Williams with his hand outstretched over our great capitol city and the park has long been recognized as one of finest views of the City.  It is a gathering place for the neighborhood, for residents of Providence and the surrounding communities and serves as a destination for those visiting from out of state.  In the spirit of Roger Williams, the park provides a place of rest and a breathtaking view of Providence and beyond, and we are grateful to work with CHNA to help improve this iconic Providence park.”

The College Hill Neighborhood Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is advocate for the neighborhood, build community, and preserve the quality of life and unique character of College Hill in Providence, RI.  We seek to give residents a louder voice in the neighborhood by solving issues effectively and constructively, working with the Mayor’s Office, City Council, Department of Planning and Development, Department of Public Works, Licensing Board, Preservation Society, Historic District Commission, Brown University, RISD, and other community, merchant, school, developer and land owner representatives to achieve results.
