OUR MOTIVE

In Guatemala, more than 305 children are born with Cleft Lip/Palate each year. While this is easily treatable in more developed countries, it is a big challenge for most families in the rural areas because parents cannot afford either formula for adequate nutrition and care or the surgery to treat this condition.

Fortunately, Partner for Surgery has designed a Community-Based Targeted Infant Nutrition Program to help these families out. Our primary goal is to provide these kids with the proper nutritional supplements and the surgery needed once they are ready. Without our intervention, these children are likely to die of starvation due to their physical limitations.

HOW WE WORK

1. When a Cleft infant is born, our trained Local Health Promoters are informed by rural midwives or the Ministry of Health staff, and the kid is brought to the nearest health center to be evaluated and registered in the system.

2. The mother then receives either a breast pump or infant formula (if no longer producing milk), special nursing bottles, and detailed breastfeeding and nutritional instructions.

3. Health Promoters see each child at home at least once per month and monitor their weight. The goal is to help the infant gain weight and be strong enough to undergo surgery.

4. Within about a year, the child will be ready for surgery, which we provide international professional teams from the USA and Canada.

5. The Health Promoter accompanies the patient and a family member to provide interpretation services and emotional support during the surgical week.

HOW YOUR DONATION WILL BE USED

All funds received from this campaign will go directly to the program to pay for the nutrition and the surgical care that the children need. The monthly cost of the nutritional supplements needed per kid is US$85, and the cost of the surgery is US$390.

En Guatemala, más de 305 niños nacen con Labio Leporino/Paladar Hendido cada año. Aunque esto se puede tratar fácilmente en los países más desarrollados, es un gran desafío para la mayoría de las familias en las áreas rurales de Guatemala, ya que los padres no pueden pagar la fórmula para una nutrición y un cuidado adecuados, ni la cirugía necesaria para tratar esta condición.

Afortunadamente, Partner for Surgery ha diseñado un Programa de Nutrición Infantil dirigido a nivel comunitario para ayudar a estas familias. Nuestro objetivo principal es proporcionar a estos niños los suplementos nutricionales adecuados, y la cirugía necesaria una vez estén listos. Sin nuestra intervención, lo más probable es que estos niños mueran a causa de altos niveles de desnutrición, dadas sus limitaciones físicas.

CÓMO TRABAJAMOS

1. Cuando nace un bebé con hendidura labio-palatina, nuestros promotores comunitarios son notificados por las comadronas o el personal de salud y el niño es llevado al centro de salud más cercano para ser evaluado y registrado en el sistema.

2. Luego, la madre recibe un tiraleche o fórmula (si ya no produce leche), biberones especiales e instrucciones detalladas sobre lactancia materna y nutrición.

3. Los promotores de salud visitan a cada niño, en su hogar, al menos una vez al mes y monitorean su peso y crecimiento. El objetivo es ayudar al bebé a aumentar de peso y estar lo suficientemente fuerte como para someterse a una cirugía.

4. En aproximadamente un año, el niño estará listo para la cirugía, que proporcionamos con equipos profesionales internacionales de Estados Unidos y Canadá.

5. El Promotor de Salud acompaña al paciente y a un miembro de la familia, para brindar servicios de interpretación y apoyo emocional durante la semana de cirugía.

CÓMO SE UTILIZARÁ TU DONACIÓN

Todos los fondos recibidos como resultado de esta campaña irán directamente al Programa para pagar tanto la nutrición como la atención quirúrgica que los pacientes necesiten. El costo mensual de los suplementos nutricionales necesarios por niño es de US$85 y el costo de la cirugía es de US$390.

Volcan de Fuego erupted on June 3rd leaving hundreds dead and many more injured. Partner for Surgery needs funds for Post Operative Burn Treatment for hundreds of survivors.

Partner for Surgery has long worked with a gifted burn surgeon, Dr. Lourdes Santizo, who volunteers her skills.  She has taken on many of these burned patients but desperately needs supplies for the long post-operative treatment these patients must have to recover.

While easily treatable in rich countries, cleft lip/palate often has tragic consequences for the desperately poor Guatemalans we serve. Cleft infants are unable to breastfeed and their parents cannot afford formula. In desperation, parents try feeding them various liquids with a spoon, but usually the child cannot receive adequate nourishment. This tragic situation inspired Partner for Surgery’s Targeted Infant Nutrition Program (TINP). When a cleft infant is born, our trained rural midwife informs the local Health Promoter. The infant is brought to the nearest health center as soon as possible and evaluated, weighed and registered in the health system. The mother then receives either a breast pump or donated formula (if no longer producing milk), special nursing bottles, and detailed instructions. Without the intervention of TINP, these children are likely to die of starvation. While the initial goal of the program is simply to keep the infant alive, ultimately, the goal is to help the infant gain weight and be strong enough to undergo surgery. Health Promoters see each child at least once per month and monitor their weight gain. Within about a year, the child will be ready for surgery. The Health Promoter accompanies the patient and a member of the family, to provide interpretation services and emotional support.
