PAMBE Ghana 5K Walk: Empowering Students Through Technology

PAMBE Ghana is proud to announce our 2026 annual 5K fundraising walk! On May 14th, students at the La'Angum Learning Center (LLC) in Northern Ghana will take to the streets alongside students at the Albrook School in New Jersey. Two schools, two continents, one shared purpose.

This Year's Theme: Tech Literacy at LLC

LLC has operated a computer lab for several years, giving students hands-on experience with technology as part of their education. This year's fundraiser is dedicated to keeping that program strong. Updated equipment, reliable internet access, software, and course materials all require ongoing investment, as does supporting the dedicated ICT teacher who makes it run. Your donation helps ensure the lab remains a real resource for students.

The Walk

On the morning of May 14th, LLC students will set out from the PAMBE Ghana office and wind through the heart of Langbinsi, passing the Chief Imam's house, the main street, and gathering spots that form the backbone of their community. Along the way, they will solicit pledges and encouragement from neighbors, local business owners, and community leaders. It is as much a celebration as it is a fundraiser, with the students serving as ambassadors for their own education.

At the same time, an ocean away, students at the Albrook School in New Jersey will be doing the same. This is the heart of the partnership: two very different communities, brought together by a belief that every child deserves a quality education. Albrook students have walked alongside LLC students for several years now, and that relationship has grown into something genuinely special for both schools. This year, students and teachers from both schools will also meet face to face over Zoom, sharing their experiences and learning from each other across 5,000 miles. For kids in Ghana, talking in real time with peers in New Jersey is just the beginning of what tech literacy can make possible.

Hello, my name is Alice Iddi-Gubbels, the Executive Director Emeritus of PAMBE Ghana. I am fundraising for PAMBE Ghana to sponsor two teachers from the La'angum Learning Centre (LLC) in Ghana to undertake a Montessori Elementary course in Houston Montessori Center, USA.

I founded PAMBE Ghana which established the La’angum Learning Center (LLC), in partnership with rural communities, in the North

East Region of Ghana in 2008. We started small, with 40 preschool children. La'angum now serves over 270 children from pre-K to 6th grade in this rural area. The first cohort of children who began in 2008 are now entering tertiary institutions.

PAMBE Ghana LLC' continues to focus on providing a solid foundation in the early years. "The end depends on the beginning"!

Being a certified Montessori practitioner, I began LLC on the Montessori education model since its inception. PAMBE Ghana strove to provide Montessori teacher training and support by sending visiting resource persons for short periods over the last few years.

While this support has been helpful, it has become apparent that it is not sufficient, as LLC student population has grown and more and more teachers, who know little about Montessori, have joined the teaching staff. Additionally, I went on retirement three years ago.

There is a dire need to provide professional Montessori training to the teachers, and gradually build local capacity and expertise in this area. And yet, there is no accredited institution to provide Montessori elementary training and internship in Ghana.

These funds will help to cover the two teachers' lodging, living expenses and commuting to Houston Montessori Center for lectures and seminars, as well as their lodging, living expenses and commuting for the practicum during the school year.

The school community of Montessori by the Sea in Saint Pete Beach, Florida is raising money to help another Montessori school in Africa: La' Angum Learning Center in rural area of Bumboazio, Ghana. The school name La'Angum is based on the Mampruli expression, meaning "many hands make light work!" The children at both schools have become Pen Pals and we are very excited to be learning about each other!  When we asked the La' Angum Learning Center, (LLC),  what the children and their families here in the U.S. could provide, they responded by asking for help with acquiring bicycles.  The 250 children who are in Kindergarten though 6th grade at LLC have walk to walk long distances from their homes in other villages. Bicycles have a significant impact on the students' commute time to and from school.

Children with access to bicycles greatly reduce their commute time and spend more time on their education. Many of these children aspire to go on to high school and, hopefully, a University program. This commute time particularly impacts the girls attending LLC, who are expected to help with domestic chores. They often have to walk miles a day to attend school and then do hours of duties upon returning home. Many times these chores involve errands to collect water from local wells. This task in itself can require a long walk. If the girl cannot complete domestic tasks and attend school, chores must come first.



My wife Ellen, who is a Lower Elementary teacher at Montessori by the Sea and I will travel to the  La'Angum Learning Center on June 12 to provide teacher training. We will be there for a month and would like to set up a Bike Share Program at LLC while we are there. We plan to purchase bicycles and necessary tools and supplies to maintain and repair bikes in Ghana to help support the local economy. Then we will show the students and teachers at LLC how to repair bikes so that the older children can take ownership of the Bike Share Program as leaders of LLC. 

 

By providing the school with the  bicycles, skills and supplies to fix and maintain their bikes, the students and teachers can support and grow a bike program for themselves. That is why we need your help. Our initial goal is modest. We want to provide the school with as many bikes and supplies as we can buy from the local businesses and teach the children how to repair and maintain their bikes. These children can then pass their skills on to younger generations. This will create a program that we can grow and support as the school itself grows to serve more children in the community.

Your donations to this project go directly to "Pambe Ghana. Inc. This is a fully registered 501 (C) (3) organization. These funds will be set aside and allocated directly towards expenses incurred to facilitate this project. This project offers a full 100% donation to the cause with 0% "overhead/administration" expenses.  100% of your money goes towards the bikes and equipment. Ellen and I will be there independently of this project. Therefore no money will go towards travel expenses.

On April 28th, 2023 PAMBE Ghana will hold our second annual 5k fundraiser!

Last year's event was a big success with children at the La'Angum Learning Center (LLC) in Northern Ghana and Albrook Montessori in New Jersey walking to honor their founders and raise money to help PAMBE Ghana fund teacher salaries. We also will expand participation this year with an event in Bluff Creek Park in Oklahoma City at 9am on Saturday April 29 for our local volunteers and supporters. Please come join us!

Our fundraising goal of $5,000 is enough to cover the average annual salary of two LLC teachers. These dedicated educators are our greatest resource, many of whom have been teaching at LLC since our first class in 2008. This initial class of students has just now graduated high school, and we are so proud! None of it would have been possible without the staff and teachers at LLC.

To put our $5,000 goal in perspective, we need to raise just $625 for each of the 8 classes at LLC or just over $20 per student. Please join us in supporting our LLC teachers as they create a model of education in Ghana!

PAMBE Ghana is excited to announce a fundraiser in honor of our founder, Alice Azumi Iddi-Gubbels. La'Angum Learning Center (LLC) students in Northern Ghana will participate in a 5k relay run on April 14th, 2022, alongside students at the Albrook School in New Jersey.  The "Better Together" theme for the event couldn't be more appropriate as it will unite the students at these two schools in a common goal while honoring their respective founders.  

You can join the Albrook School in supporting PAMBE Ghana by sponsoring LLC runners. Our goal is to raise the equivalent of two teacher salaries for an entire year.  Each donation helps continue the high quality Montessori education that Alice brought to her home area in Northern Ghana back in 2008 with an initial pre-K class of just 35 students.  Today, LLC has blossomed into a school with 8 classrooms, 13 teachers, and 3 administrators operating with deep community support to maintain a current enrollment of over 249 students (pre-K through Grade 6).
