It is always with a heavy heart that we launch a fundraising campaign for one of the animals in our care, because we know that it means that they are in dire medical circumstances, and are in need of extraordinary medical care. Unfortunately, that's where we find ourselves with our two precious puppies, Kuma and Kubby.
Kuma and Kubby were rescued by PALS Haven after a concerned citizen witnessed them being dumped in the median of a busy road, here in Lodi. They were playful, active, and so affectionate; we instantly fell in love with them and couldn't understand how anyone could so heartlessly dump them.
During their initial intake examination with our veterinarian, a Grade 2 heart murmur was detected in both puppies. We continued to closely monitor their condition, and they underwent routine follow-ups with our veterinarian. Meanwhile, they continued to grow and play, tear up our meet and great yards, and bring smiles to our faces with their puppy antics! And grow they did, and before we knew it, they were old enough for us to get them spayed and neutered and find them great forever homes. But, first, we needed to get echocardiograms performed to ensure that it would be safe to spay and neuter them with their heart murmurs.
We were in the process of setting them up for those procedures when Kuma suddenly stopped acting like her normal self. One day she was happy and energetic, and the next, we were rushing her to an emergency veterinarian for lethargy, a lack of appetite, and labored breathing. She was stabilized overnight, but we were advised to get her to a cardiologist immediately. We were able to get her seen at UC Davis the next evening, but the results were absolutely devastating.
Kuma is suffering from severe mitral valve dysplasia, and subaortic stenosis; this means that Kuma is in heart failure, and there are no procedures that can correct her heart conditions. She is currently on several medications and she has responded to them well. She is bright and playful, though not quite so active, and still so full of love and cuddles. She is being fostered, is surrounded by people who love and care about her, and she's receiving the best possible medical care. But, the end result we fear is that our time with her will only be measured in weeks and months.
And, as utterly devestating as Kuma's prognosis is, we are now also faced with the possibility of similar news for her brother, Kubby. Kubby will be seeing a cardiac specialist this month, and will also have an echocardiogram performed so that we can see what condition his heart is in. Needless to say, we are hoping and praying for a better prognosis for Kubby.
We are raising money to pay for the medical expenses already incurred, as well as future medical expenses for both Kuma and Kubby. Please join our cause, and help give Kuma and Kubby the medical care and support they need over the coming months. Whether you're able to donate $15, $25, $50, or more, it will go directly toward paying for the medical expenses incurred to care for Kuma and Kubby, including cardiologist consultations, medical tests, echocardiograms, and medications. We thank you so much for your generosity, and your continued support of our animals, and our mission.
