Outta the Cage

Jill (left) and Pinky (right) are good friends with a lot in common. They love morning hikes, relaxing in the sun, and racing to see who can get home first.  

And now they are both undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Pinky was dumped at the shelter by her owner with a ruptured mammary mass. There was blood and necrotic tissue on the floor of her kennel. Some volunteer angels contacted Jill -- who runs Outta the Cage rescue -- and Pinky was rushed to the veterinarian. Pinky's mass was removed but the margins weren't clean. Her mast cell carcinoma and spindle cell sarcoma will eventually spread.

Jill has good insurance and her cancer is treatable. Her chemo will last through the fall. Pinky has a wonderful oncologist and is on a gentle oral chemotherapy treatment. With the mass gone and targeted medications, she is a different dog, happily poking around the backyard, napping--and and beating Jill when they race!

It's the age-old dilemma in animal rescue: how many resources do you spend on a single dog? Oncology treatment for dogs and humans is expensive.  Outta the Cage has already spent over $8500 on Pinky's surgery and oncology care.  

But Pinky is Pinky. If you meet her, you'll see what we mean. Your donations will help us take care of her as long as she has a great life. And it will allow us to replenish money targeted to help other dogs escape the shelter system and find forever families.
