About OG Charleston (The Orton-Gillingham Center of Charleston)
Far too many students are falling behind in reading, with nearly two-thirds of fourth graders unable to read at grade level. The crisis continues into adulthood: 19% of high school graduates in the U.S. cannot read, and dyslexia—affecting 1 in 5 children and accounting for 80% of all learning disabilities—often goes undiagnosed and unsupported. Poor literacy skills have devastating consequences, contributing to cycles of poverty, unemployment, and incarceration. At the heart of this crisis is a systemic failure to train teachers in effective, evidence-based reading instruction, leaving them unprepared to meet the diverse needs of their students. By addressing this issue, we can ensure every child has access to the support they need to become a confident, capable reader.
