Over 15 years ago an idea began to take shape. Some members of what would become the Oregon Coast Community Forest Association began looking for ways to practice better forestry on family lands. They started experimenting with "light touch" ideas and held firm to the belief that management and human activity can be beneficial for forest health and people.  OCCFA is a member of the Forest Guild and is committed to a diverse and beautifully productive landscape!



A part of this forest land is now  known as Forest Hill. Nearly 17 acres, this beautiful property has a commanding view of Yaquina Bay and is close to Newport, OR.  Additionally a neighboring woodland owner is committed to the same forestry managment values. This property is  where the Local Woods brand originates and is the showcase for the OCCFA  value-added story.

A strategy for sustainability has emerged and is gaining support in Lincoln County. The idea, that not one branch should leave Lincoln County without value being added, has informed the dreaming and planning for this community forest. 

Part of the dream has been to identify a way to tell the story of one tree, geo-locate that tree and create a brand (Local Woods). The Local Woods brand as an idea has already garnered support, and started in 2005 with the milling of S1 or (Sitka one). This allows
consumers to track the tree story from cradle to grave and is a small piece of what has become our OCCFA strategy: to support a sustainable forest that is moving forestlands towards old growth conditions.

The OCCFA  has successfully secured Forest Hill  as a showcase property. We believe this will enhance our ability to educate our community about community forestry.  As we continue our commitment to pursue other opportunities, we are excited about the possibility of utilizing Forest Hill and partnering  with other neighbors, such as Blue Agate Woods, to inspire the community in a tangible way about community forestry.


The small showcase forestland search has been in play since 2009.  We have tromped around potential properties, had serious discussions, and have been in escrow elsewhere before purchasing Forest Hill. We are pleased to now have a home for the Local Woods story and to be entering this tangible phase of our community forest  growth.
