Off-The-Grid Missions

Off-The-Grid Missions will be going to the Bahamas to respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.  Our goal is to raise funds enough to cover for supplies needed to provide access to clean water, solar light as well as personal needs.  

WHY DEAF PEOPLE:
In the aftermath of a natural disaster when an NGO brings relief such as food, water and shelter –unless directed to go specifically to the deaf, supplies will immediately go to those who hear as notifications are transmitted by word-of-mouth (loud-speaker and walkie-talkie).  

MISSION GOAL:
Our goal is to provide supplies for 500 individuals –all who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind, Deaf-Disabled, as well as Children of Deaf Adults (Codas).  Finding the deaf is an incredible challenge when there is no electricity.  As of today, we have finally made contact with the community to include information on their current state; they are isolated, without food, water, and light.  Our team will arrive the second week of October into Freeport (where our base is located), and distribute supplies there, as well as Nassau and Abaco.  Based off of the need and the information coming in, we will supply solar lights, implement clean water filtration systems, and distribute rapid-hydration care for up to 500 people. We would like to request funding specific to this disaster relief effort.  

WHO WE ARE:
We are a primarily female-driven organization, all 100% volunteer/unpaid.  Every team member is also a member of the Deaf Community, and we use various forms of Sign Language to communicate with the people we serve.  Not only do we know the source of the problem, because we live it –but we focus on the solution in a very efficient and effective way.

In response to the recent Earthquakes and Tsunami that hit Indonesia, our team is preparing to provide the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing with solar powered emergency lights and CLEAN water with our partner Waves for Water. We will begin searching for Deaf/HH where the quake destroyed 67,000 homes and displaced 350,000 people now living in camps.

What will these expenses cover: The travel/transportation cost to navigate the island affected by the disasters in order to search for the Deaf/HH to distribute light and clean water; hiring of a local guide on the island; cost of emergency supplies and baggage fees.
