NYC Books Through Bars
I have had the privilege of interacting with and learning from formerly incarcerated men and women through my work in substance abuse and mental health. I have seen firsthand the impact that incarceration has had on their lives and the limitations that it imposes on their futures. 95% of prisoners will return to our communities one day. Literacy and access to reading materials can profoundly improve their chances at successful reintegration.
As an avid reader and self-proclaimed book worm, I understand the transformative power of books. Words have the unique ability to activate our imaginations, transport us to different times and places, change our emotions, and deepen our connections to the world around us.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I decided to do something a bit different for my birthday this year. On November 27th, I will turn 27 years old, marking this year as my “golden birthday.” I want to commemorate this birthday by donating to an organization that is near and dear to my heart—NYC Books through Bars.
“Connecting those behind bars to books and other resources is an important harm-reduction strategy. The violences of prison are many. The denial of access to education and contact with the outside world is one. With our work, we aim to address educational inequity. Prisons have slashed educational programs and the federal government still denies Pell Grants to those in prison. We provide education, but NYC BTB also bridges a gap between the incarcerated and the “free” world. Our work decreases isolation and empowers those behind bars by providing resources and community.” --NYC BTB
My birthday wish is to raise $2,700 by November 27th. I hope that you will join me in raising awareness and contributing to this cause.
