Support Healing Workforce Development in Detroit’s Northend
Introduction:
For 25 years, Northend Christian CDC (NECCDC) has transformed vacant lots into green jobs, fed thousands of families, and helped build a stronger, more self-sufficient Northend. Now, we're asking you to join us in expanding our Healing Workforce Development programs—work that restores dignity through meaningful employment for people too often left behind.
Why We're Raising Funds:
We need to raise $500,000 in unrestricted funding to:
- Sustain our day-to-day farm and organizational operations
- Expand our Green Infrastructure and Food Safety workforce training programs
- Support wraparound services like mental health support, addiction recovery, transportation, and housing navigation
- Hire and train more community members facing employment barriers
Our Approach: Healing Through Work
We created a unique model called Healing Workforce Development—an approach that values lived experience, not just résumés.
We work with people who face:
- Past incarceration or criminal records
- Substance use disorder recovery
- Housing and food insecurity
- Mental health challenges
- Lack of formal education or job history
- Gender identity discrimination
- And more
Instead of beginning with background checks and drug tests, we start with trust, conversation, and opportunity. Then we wrap support around each person with tools, mentors, and work that heals.
What We Do:
1. Workforce Development
- Paid on-the-job training ($16.43/hr?) in farming, green infrastructure, masonry, poultry, demolition, and more
- Soft skills workshops: conflict resolution, time management, financial literacy
- Hands-on experience for college interns through partnerships with the University of Michigan
- Certification programs in GAP food safety, composting, rain catchment, green roof installation, and more
2. Community Development
- Preserve community ownership by supporting land trusts, affordable housing, and anti-displacement strategies
- Create healing jobs for Detroiters with barriers to employment — from farm work to construction, youth mentoring, and more
- Activate underused spaces into vibrant cultural, green, and social hubs — like our Art Alleyway and Oakland Avenue Urban Farm
- Provide hands-on training in everything from food distribution and green infrastructure to digital storytelling and small business
- Amplify resident voice through advocacy, civic engagement, and participatory planning
3. Youth Empowerment
- Paid employment for Detroit youth through GDYT
- 4-H agriculture programs, culinary arts exploration, and academic support
- A 25-year track record of helping young people reach college, launch businesses, and gain licenses
4. Food Justice & Access
- We operate Detroit’s only GAP-certified urban farm
- Our Farmers Market brings fresh produce to local families
- We distribute hot meals, food baskets, and offer land access to Black growers through the Black Farmer Land Fund
Your Impact in Action:
- Youth trained on our farm are starting their own food businesses
- Formerly incarcerated residents are now independent contractors or farm team leaders
- Students interned with us and are now graduating from college
- A once-vacant house is becoming a hub for jobs, food, and community gathering
How You Can Help:
- Your donation—whether $25 or $25,000—helps us transform barriers into bridges. Here’s what your support can do:
- $100 helps cover a week of meals and transit for a new farm worker
- $500 sponsors one participant’s job-readiness toolkit (gear, boots, and tools)
- $2,500 funds a full month of workforce training for one team member
- $100,000+ can fully fund one of our 2025 workforce tracks (Green Infrastructure or Food Safety)
