North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association

Hi everyone! My name is Jesse Murnane, some of you know me as JJ from Show Up.

A few months ago there was a break in at the North Country Underground Railroad Museum in AuSable Forks. Although there was camera footage, it was dark and the security alarm scared off the intruder. However they did not leave without causing great damage to both the door and window that was part of the actual and original Underground Railroad.

This obviously and sadly is not going to be able to be repaired in its original fashion. Some of you may not even have realized we have an Underground Railroad Museum in the Adirondacks and that is why they are very much needing our help in affording the cost of a new window and the labor associated with it (especially before winter months).

Why is my goal $6,000? Well as I talked with the museum staff it also got brought to my attention that they are in desperate need of a cooling system in the summer time. As you can imagine this is also pricey for a non profit museum to afford.

I hope you understand the meaning behind my asking for any donation you can afford to the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association.

Every contribution, big or small, makes a real impact. Even just a few dollars a person can add up to a large amount fast!

Want to join our effort to "Save the Safe House"?

The North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association (est. 2005) is raising funds to save a slice of history. Our goal is to purchase the former property of Quaker Abolitionist and Underground Railroad Conductor Stephen Keese Smith. From the 1840s onward, Smith spent $1,000 to provide refuge in a hidden barn room behind his farmhouse for an estimated 400 enslaved persons. Freedom seekers stayed on his property during the last leg of their months-long journey to freedom in Canada.

The historic structures on the property need extensive repair work. The front porch on the main farmhouse recently collapsed during a storm, and the 3 barns on the property need repairs to be structurally sound enough for the public to journey inside and step back into their important history.

Currently, NO historical site recognizes the Abolition Movement between Clinton, Franklin and St. Lawrence County, NY. We aim to fill the void with this site.
