‼️ WARNING: UPSETTING IMAGES ‼️
Ya know what? It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been involved in rescue and how shocking the atrocities you’ve seen are.... dogs like William still manage to stop us in our tracks and take our breath away. William is a handsome chocolate colored male pit bull mix who was brought into ACCT Philly yesterday (Thursday 7/19/18) as a stray. He was found with a shockingly swollen, disfigured head, and blood shot eyes... but the sweetest of demeanors despite his obvious painful condition. As soon as NARPS became aware of William and his horrific condition, we started scrambling for a medical foster so we could step up for him.... a foster to be waiting in the wings for him once he would be ready to be discharged from the vet, depending on the severity of his diagnosis. Foster was found (Thank you Melissa!!!!) and we quickly called ACCT to confirm we would take him, and then VSEC Philadelphia to let them know to expect him!! NARPS is very blessed to have a wonderful network of talented vets and veterinarian surgeons, like our favorite Dr. Ben-Amotz (who oversaw Josephine’s care and did her facial reconstruction surgery!!). William was well received at VSEC and the staff was quickly enamored by his unbelievably sweet and kind disposition. He was stabilized for the night by Dr. Nelson and set up for a full work up today to fully assess the extent of damage to his head. Upon initial examination, he presented with bilateral scleral hemorrhage’s due to the trauma to his head, as well as a large amount of fluid like swelling over the majority of his head... possible seroma, hematoma, or abscess... until further diagnosis. We were happy to hear that he showed no neurological deficiencies and seemed over to have good mentation. Dr. Ben-Amotz took over Williams care as of today and William was quickly set up for a CT scan to show the extent of damages to his head... a risky endeavor due to potential increased intracranial pressure, but one that our vets felt was necessary. They took every precaution possible to accomplish safe results and did a fabulous job. The results of Williams CT scan bowled us over and broke our hearts. 20+ fractures were found throughout his head.... his skull, his orbitals, his jaw.... circumferentially, there are very few place where fractures were not found. What in the world happened to this dog?!? It’s blatantly obvious some unbelievable blunt force trauma occurred... but left the rest of his body injury free... not a scratch, not a cut... no road rash, no abrasions, nothing. While we would much prefer to pretend we think this was an accident, like being hit by a car... we find it next to impossible to fathom. This was, more than likely, a very intentional, evil attack caused by a soulless sub-human. Maybe a baseball bat. Maybe a brick. The possibilities are sadly endless. But this was no accident. The fact this dog still wags his tail and greets everyone happily and warmly is just inconceivable... and the reason why we think dogs (and all animals) are the best creations ever. As for Williams injuries and his prognosis, it’s a bit of wait and see. He is currently stable, on pain medications as well as antibiotics, and he will be heading home to his foster shortly! Our wonderful vet is doing further homework and is consulting with other fellow veterinarian surgeons, including a veterinarian dental specialist to go over Williams fractures and the plan for proceeding. It is currently up in the air as to whether or not he will be undergoing surgery.... one or several. William will need to be on a very special, soft diet for the time being due to the countless fractures to his mouth and jaw. To say the least, this precious boy has a long, but loving, road ahead of him!!
NARPS will happily keep our faithful followers and supporters updated every step of the way during Williams journey and care!! We absolutely could not do this without you! Taking on major medical cases like this one takes a village... a BIG ONE!! Thankfully, we have an amazing and supportive village of NARPS fans, followers, and supporters. You all are the sole reason William is in our care and is able to be given the best care there is to offer! Be proud... NARPS PROUD!!
As you can imagine... our veterinary bills for William will not be cheap! We currently are at around $2500 for his care with one nights stay, medications, anesthesia (for CT SCAN), and the CT scan. We are only just getting started... especially if he ends up needing facial reconstruction surgery to restabilize his brutally fractured face. Please consider donating towards Williams cause... your donations, as always, are tax deductible!! Thank you for your generosity!!
