The Sign of Music: The Pandemic's Sign Language
Masks save lives , but did you know that they pose a unique challenge to deaf people? Sign language is a way that many deaf people communicate. American Sign Language (ASL) has many components in delivering the message. Facial expression is vital in ASL. So while masks prevent COVID 19 from spreading, they preclude facial expressions, making it hard to understand and eliminate any chance of lip reading. This makes it impossible for deaf and hearing people in conventional face masks to communicate freely in ASL and to be fully understood. Kids are struggling wearing their own masks all day which is compounded by the difficulty of trying to understand their teachers, who are also wearing masks.
We would like to help create a deaf-friendly environment, without barriers to communication, at New York School for the Deaf. We want to support them having access to a new type of transparent clear mask. Although they are not perfect, they offer a creative solution. At the very least, we want to enlighten people of the additional challenges faced by the deaf community during the pandemic. We are so sure it is something that most people would never have thought about.
With every donation, no matter how large or small, you will be contributing to the support of students at the New York School for the Deaf. Help us make their lives more comfortable and their communication a little more accessible.
