We are excited to introduce the FOOD SOSPESO Project, a new initiative by the Rotary Club of New York (RCNY), inspired by the spirit of generosity and compassion.

The concept is simple — and powerful:

Through FOOD SOSPESO (“suspended food”), individuals and organizations can pre-pay meals for those who cannot afford them. It’s a direct, personal way to fight hunger in our community — one meal, one person at a time.

We are seeking $25,000 in seed capital to officially launch this project.

Your support will help us:

• Build partnerships with local restaurants and grocery stores,

• Set up an easy-to-use platform for participants and recipients,

• Cover outreach, materials, and logistics to get the project running,

• Immediately begin delivering meals to those who need them most.

Project Overview

Families facing pediatric illnesses experience high rates of food insecurity. The Meal Program provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as a pantry and shared kitchens. Meals can be taken to-go for families at the hospital or enjoyed in our dining room. In 2023, we distributed 72,250 meals to 2,408 family members staying at the House.

Project Description

Our meal program ensures that families facing pediatric illnesses have reliable access to nutritious food, alleviating the burden of food insecurity. We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner to up to 95 families daily. Offering breakfast costs around $500, lunch $2,500, and dinner $3,500. Dinners are often sponsored and served by corporate volunteer groups, fostering community engagement. In 2023, we distributed over 72,250 meals to 2,408 individuals, including 826 different sick children and 1,582 additional siblings and caretakers staying at our House.

We are aiming to raise $3,500 for NYRF to sponsor one dinner. The funding will directly cover meal costs, as well as some staff time to facilitate a dinner that will serve up to 95 families, including over 250 sick children, their siblings, and their parents/caretakers.

Support our New York Club's effort for donations to the Fraternite Notre Dame Toy Drive. Any donation will help with the purchase of toys for needy children in Spanish Harlem.

This is a long standing tradition and is also supported for many years by your New York Rotary Foundation.

Support Shawn's Journey for Kids and Hurricane Helene/Milton victims in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida!

The death toll from Helene has risen to at least 232 people across six states, according to CNN’s tally, after more deaths were announced over the weekend in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Helene is the second-deadliest hurricane to strike the United States mainland in the past 50 years, following Hurricane Katrina, which killed at least 1,833 people in 2005.

Officials over the weekend announced 11 additional deaths in North Carolina, two additional deaths in South Carolina and one more death in Tennessee.

A massive relief effort is ongoing across the devastated region to restore power, rebuild damaged water and cell infrastructure and get supplies to areas cut off to road access after Helene tore up and washed out roads and bridges, officials say.

Meanwhile, searches for missing people continued Saturday.

The deaths from Helene by state as of Saturday are as follows:

North Carolina: 117 people

South Carolina: 48 people

Georgia: 33 people

Florida: 20 people

Tennessee: 12 people

Virginia: 2 people

We are now raising funds int he home stretch and Shawn is dedicating his last part of the fundraising miles to the devastating areas of the Hurricane

Shawn Jacobaccio is the Rotary Club of New York President, celebrating his 50th birthday this year. Shawn hasn't run in quite some time and used to enjoy leisurely half-marathons about ‘25 lbs ago’! He is committed to finishing this race in style and is using this opportunity not only to get into shape but also to raise funds for the New York Road Runners Team for Kids as well as the Rotary Club of New York Foundation.

The Rotary Club of New York will supply products like food, tents, blankets, socks and more generally everything that can be used in this first phase to overcome the tough winter conditions. We have also started a project to provide medical supplies upon contacting doctors operating in the field.
