New Horizons is fundraising

Emergency Preparedness
My role with New Horizons Group Homes has been as a volunteer and board member since its creation in 1992.
As a result of the recent hurricane which impacted Florida new requirements have been initated by AHCA that requires all nursing homes and ALF's to have full emergency power backup for their facilities. The cost for a system of sufficient power to operate one home with air conditioning for 96 hours (4 days) is $35,000 - $45,000. This system must be in place and operational by November 15, 2017.
The mission for this organization was, and is, to provide Christian group homes for the developmentally disabled to provide an atmosphere that is nurturing and up-lifting and ensures the well being of the clients after their parents are no longer able to care for them.
The Mary Lou Creamer Home opened on June 1, 1999, with six ladies as residents. In May 2000, construction was started on the Alice Storms Home on the same property as the Mary Lou Creamer Home. This home became the residence of six men in October 2002. We have just completed our third home for six men and are awaiting the final license from the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).
All three homes are licensed through the AHCA as assisted living facilities. The residents are required to be able to care for their own personal needs, contribute to the housekeeping duties of their residence, and work either at a business in the community or at a sheltered workshop. The residents in the homes enjoy the family atmosphere.
Because New Horizons has elected not to accept most government funding for daily operations of its homes, there is a constant need for fund raising. The homes are sustained through monthly payments from the residents from their SSI, Social Security, and/or wages, as well as Medicaid Waiver funding for qualified residents, donations, and fund raising.
All funds from this campaign are designated to support the procurement of an Emergency Power Backup System for one home. This home will be the primary location for residents of the other homes to weather any future emergency situations.
