After reading the book 1984 by George Orwell for an English assignment, I’ve come to realize how many aspects of the story now, unfortunately, apply to the state of the real world today. Politicians’ thirst for power, manipulating and censoring the truth in media, and even totalitarian motives seen within “Big Brother” in this book are not only strikingly relevant in our government now, but furthermore, push the need for truth and activism in our world. Propaganda today can be seen prominently in government officials, politics as a whole, some news organizations, and of course, all over social media. Whether it be to maintain a certain image, to make things seem less severe than they are, to promote your own products or ideas, or even for reasons completely different, we consume misinformation on almost a daily basis. But regardless of it being small or large-scale, we can make an important difference.
NPR (or National Public Radio) is a public news program whose goal is to accurately cover a range of topics by partnering with numerous organizations in order to inform the public. They strive to publish open-minded, non biased news- they want to spread the truth. NPR is concerned with politics, art, culture, music, business, health, science, and more. By funding an organization like this, we’re actively promoting a more truthful media to make people aware of what’s going on in the world around them. If we don’t know the truth, we’ll be unable to make informed decisions, especially when it comes to not only our future, but the future of our country. Whereas, if we consume accurate, trustworthy information, we’re more likely to make important, informed decisions, promoting the prosperity and well-being of our future. So while themes of the book 1984 can be clearly seen within today’s world, it’s not at all too late to change that. We can make a difference and stand up to our “Big Brother.”
