Hi, my name is Adrienne Claxton. I have END STAGE KIDNEY FAILURE, also referred to as Stage 5, Chronic Kidney Disease, CKD. This condition has caused my kidneys to stop working.
I am personally in need of a Living Kidney Donor ASAP!
In order to help other people in need of a kidney-like myself-, I am raising funds for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI).
This incredible organization is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals at risk for or affected by kidney disease. Through their vital work in prevention, education, and empowerment, NKFI is making a significant difference in our community.
Your support helps NKFI make a difference by contributing towards efforts like:
• Providing essential education and resources to individuals at risk of kidney disease.
Every donation, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in supporting NKFI’s mission. Together, we can foster a healthier community and make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by kidney disease. Thank you for your generosity!
MY STORY!
Because of this CKD, I am on dialysis, which takes up 3.5 hours per day, three days per week on the machine, and about 3 hours’ recovery time each of those days.
I have been told that I will potentially be on the Transplant List for a minimum of three years before getting a kidney transplant.
My Chronic Kidney Disease is a genetically inherited condition. Accordingly, my children and grandchildren are also at risk of contracting this disease as they age. Therefore, they would not qualify as suitable donors. My husband is also unable to be a donor due to certain health conditions that he has.
I was born and raised in the inner city, of Detroit, Michigan, in a section on the Lower East side referred to as the “Black Bottom” because of its extreme poverty level. I am the oldest of four children. Even as a child, I loved helping people! I would teach children how to put on talent shows (even though I was just a child myself). I would proudly walk around with my disabled grandmother, not comprehending why others would stare at her.
I graduated from Cass Tech High in 1969, a school for gifted students from various neighborhoods in the City of Detroit.
As I matured, I realized that helping people was my calling. I also realized that God had instilled in me a love and thirst for knowledge about Him and the gifts He has placed in the Earth. From 1973 onwards, I have been intentionally pursuing this knowledge and calling.
I met my future husband during my freshman year in college; he is six months older than me. After only three months into our relationship, we became engaged! I married at age 20, and we have been married for 53 years! We have three children, two daughters and one son; two sons-in-law (one not pictured), and six grandchildren, three granddaughters and three grandsons. We also raised my six-year-old nephew until he became an adult. We are godparents to four godchildren. (The beautiful Profile Picture above is that of my family; I am in the center with a gold-colored dress).
I worked as an Executive Secretary during the first few years of our marriage. I had paused my college career and began supporting my husband who pursued his dream of attending Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan to obtain his bachelor’s degree in business.
We then moved to Chicago where he obtained his master’s degree in business from the University of Chicago. (We have now lived in the Chicago-land area for 51 years.)
In the process of time, I learned how to navigate being a wife and mother while I obtained my bachelor's degree in business education; and, my husband completed his master’s degree while working full-time in public accounting , supporting me and our two daughters.
I continued my educational journey by attaining higher education in the fields of theology (Master of Theology), and psychology, (Master of Clinical Psychology.)
My husband and I instilled in our children a love of learning and pursuing their dreams to the fullest. However, more importantly, we have instilled in them a “Love of God.” We are thankful to God that we have children and grandchildren who have a combination of: four graduate degrees, three undergraduate degrees, four entrepreneurs and one pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacology!
In addition to teaching for many years, I have worked in the field of counseling (pastoral and clinical psychology) professionally for 30 years. Up until last year, I worked full time.
I have been actively engaged in serving in my church until I became ill. I have served in almost every aspect of service with the exception of being an usher: Teaching, Preaching, Counseling, Praying for and visiting the sick and elderly, Singing in the Choir and on the Praise Team, acting in the Theater Arts Ministry and many other services since 1977.
Until I became ill, my hobbies have included: singing, sewing, crocheting, artwork, reading and writing.
NOW that you know a little bit about me,
I am hoping for a quality of life that will allow me to once again serve more in the church, providing counseling to those who desire it, participating in hobbies (like reading, writing), spending time with loved ones (my husband, children, grandchildren, and other family and friends), and any upcoming life events.
ONE OF THE WAYS TO MAKE SURE I CAN LIVE MY LIFE TO THE FULLEST IS TO FIND A LIVING KIDNEY DONOR.
The upper age range of kidney recipients has been in the mid-80s. Life expectancy from a Living Donor is approximately
15 -20 years—the longest record as been over 30 years.
We all have two kidneys, each with the God-given ability to function on its own. So, when a donor gives one kidney, the other remaining kidney is fully functional!
My insurance covers the full cost of care for the kidney donor (including care before surgery, the actual surgery, and care after surgery). The donor won’t have to pay a deductible, coinsurance, or any other costs for the donor's hospital stay.
Please consider getting evaluated to donate a kidney. Also, please share this information in the event someone would be interested in getting evaluated to donate their kidney. This is truly a lifesaving gift. My family and I are grateful for your support!
