Hiking for NBCDI
Dear friends and family,
On Wednesday, July 1st we will set out to hike the Colorado Trail. With food and tents on our backs, we will embark from Denver and hike 486 miles to Durango, stopping along the way every 6-7 days to resupply in small mountain towns. Due to COVID, it has been difficult for many to continue doing things they enjoy and we are grateful for the opportunity to spend 5 weeks in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
While we are excited and anxious to begin our journey, we would be remiss to ignore recent events of police brutality which have exposed both the historical and contemporary forms of systemic racism in the United States. We endeavor to build a community founded upon ideals of equal opportunity and acceptance, not oppression and discrimination. Opportunity and freedom in America should not be reserved for a certain race, gender, or sexual orientation.
Though we would love to support every cause that requires funding and attention in 2020, we have chosen to focus our efforts on raising money for a charity that we think will make a substantial difference in the lives of young people. The National Black Child Development Institute works toward promoting the education, care, and health of black children and their families in the US. Having both gone through the educational system in America, we enjoyed tremendous opportunities and resources afforded to us in safe, constructive, and well-funded environments. We are aware that this is not the case for many Americans, especially Americans of color.
It is our hope that by combining our interest in adventure and incorporating you in our journey, together we can help make a significant impact in cultivating the United States that we ALL feel comfortable living in.
In donating to NBCDI, you will be helping to fund programs across the country focused on health and wellness, literacy, family engagement, and preparation for college of young black children. We believe that no group of people should be given a worse education based on the color of their skin. Since the end of legal segregation, efforts to equalize funding have led to the rise in performance of minority students. But we are not done yet.
The United States has the potential to serve as a leader in the international community, but it must first live up to its domestic promises of freedom, equal opportunity, as well as support of ethnic and racial diversity.
We have divided our trip into 28 segments. Our goal is to raise $100 for each segment we complete. DONATE NOW and you can help us give $2800 directly to the National Black Child Development Institute.
