Nashville Bail Fund Fundraiser
A month from today I’ll be competing in my first 70.3 Ironman in Roanoke, Virginia.
What is an Ironman? A series of long-distance triathlon events consisting of 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1-mile run the 70.3 refers to a total distance of mileage.
For my race, I am fundraising for @nashvillebailfund! NCBF is a local nonprofit organization that pays bail money for people accused of a crime who can’t afford to pay their way out of jail, at no cost to them. Working in the criminal justice system, I have personally met ppl, including those experiencing homelessness, held in jail for driving without a license to trespassing who couldn’t get out simply bc they couldn’t afford to pay. Ridiculous!
How does this happen? If you or your family member are arrested, you are “presumed innocent” till convicted. But, if bail is set you actually stay in jail till you pay it, and if you can’t pay then you are locked up until your case is resolved. Talk about coercive!
What does this mean? This means until Nashville ends money bail like @keishabottoms did in Atlanta, we need to intervene and help Nashville Community Bail Fund free our community members from jail while they fight the case against them.
Because I have some dope friends over @slimandhuskys - they have agreed to match any funds that are raised.
