Support Our Island Elders
Fundamentally our society idealizes youth and often turns a blind eye to those reaching their later years. Within our culture, there is often an "out of sight, out of mind" approach towards aging, mortality, and the gradual decline in quality of life that sadly no longer strikes us as unusual.
The pandemic has been disproportionately cruel to the wellbeing of our elders, especially those who live in isolated conditions. Witnessing their experiences, even at a distance, the importance of having something to live for is clear.
It has been exciting to find out about the Saltmarsh Senior Center and the associated non-profit, Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs (NCEA). Upon speaking with them, I learned that this past year they have been unable to host any of their usual fundraising events or ongoing in person activities, which have traditionally created the means for their programming and building maintenance. Specifically, the Saltmarsh Center is in desperate need of new flooring.
On Friday, February 26th starting at 12 PM, we will be hosting a digital bake sale to benefit NCEA. Baked goods will be donated by local friends and family of the hospitality industry. All of the proceeds from the bake sale will go directly to NCEA so that they may continue to provide the resources necessary for the elders in our community. We also welcome monetary donations.
Concerns have been expressed by the Department of Health regarding the in-person aspect of our sale, thus we will be auctioning off all of the baked goods via Instagram stories @100milemakers
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs, Inc., and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
