Ride for Mental Health
I don’t think it’s a secret that I’ve been a dedicated runner for over a decade now (nor is this me saying that I am not currently a dedicated runner). But recently I’ve been doing something a little different and have dipped my toes in the biking world. Next Sunday I will be attempting to bike from Belle Isle to Lake Michigan (specifically Kirk Park). This ride will be on behalf of the Michigan National Alliance on Mental Health. This organization works with individuals who struggle with mental health issues ranging from severe depression, ADHD, PTSD, and more. I am doing this physical challenge with the intention of bringing more attention to the mental challenges that many face. If you would like to get involved, please consider donating a lump sum, or commenting/messaging me with a commitment of donating a certain amount per mile I bike, and PLEASE share and pass this message along. Let’s work together to raise awareness and end the stigma.
NAMI Michigan's Mission:
NAMI Michigan and its affiliates are dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life for persons, families and others, who are affected by mental illness, including children with serious emotional disorders, through support, education, advocacy and research.
NAMI Michigan's Vision:
NAMI Michigan will be the foremost advocate at the state level for persons affected by mental illness, including children with serious emotional disorders, and the leading proponent on consumer and family involvement in care, treatment and recovery. We will strengthen local affiliates to provide support, education and advocacy in their communities. NAMI Michigan will link National resources with local affiliate passion and action. We will influence public policy and coordinate affiliate, family and consumer involvement to influence our public policy at the state level.
Some of what NAMI does:
NAMI educates by offering thousands of communities across the United States through NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates, our education programs
NAMI advocates by helping to shape national public policy for people with mental illness and their families and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to save mental health in all states.
NAMI listens and provides a toll-free NAMI HelpLine (800) [phone redacted] which allows them to respond personally to hundreds of thousands of requests each year, providing free referral, information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many.
NAMI leads with public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week, and NAMIWalks successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding. NAMI works with reporters on a daily basis to make sure our country understands how important mental health is.
