Help Lonely Holocaust Survivors Find Serenity and Support
October 7 and its aftermath have reawakened unthinkable traumas for Holocaust Survivors. It has been a year of grief and suffering for so many, and Survivors have been hit hard with echoes of their horrific past.

For the past 8 years, Nachas Health has been sending Holocaust Survivors to a beautiful hotel in upstate New York, for a tranquil retreat. There, they have the chance to relax in a setting far away from the stress of the city, reconnect with other Survivors, and recharge for the coming year.

They have been eagerly looking forward to this respite all year. However, we need your help to make this happen.

We have partnered with a magnificent hotel, who will give us a discounted price for our cherished Survivors. We are turning to you as an individual with a generous heart, to complement the funding we receive from Blue Card to enable us to gift additional Holocaust Survivors this eagerly awaited retreat.

The Survivors keep sharing how much joy and peace the retreat brings them. Below are some of the comments made by Survivors regarding the retreat:

"These few days mean so much for me," Hannah Rychik, a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, shares with shining eyes.

“I wait all year for this retreat; it gives me strength for the rest of the year,” Peter Blumenthal, a survivor of the Budapest Ghetto, confides to us.

“I’m lonely every day. This vacation makes me feel so much less alone,” David Einhorn, a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, emotionally shares.

Please Help Holocaust Survivors in Our Community
I couldn’t hold back my tears when Esther*, 89 years old, described to me how she and her sister subsisted on crusts of bread for two long years in Auschwitz. It wasn’t her story from the concentration camp that broke me (tragic though it was) - it was her shining face as she proudly held up a loaf of bread, and told me how she could make it stretch a whole month, if she had to. “I’ve done it before, I can do it again,” she insisted.

Esther isn’t the only Holocaust survivor living in squalor, utterly destitute. There are hundreds of men and women in our community who survived unspeakable horrors during the War, and are now enduring poverty and suffering that is both heartbreaking and shameful. For all that they experienced, one would expect that they would live in comfort for the rest of their days. Sadly though, government benefits and reparations can barely cover rent, let alone food, clothing, and medical expenses.

Jacob*, 92 years old, was too ashamed to call me himself. His neighbor texted me last week with photos of his sparse fridge. “He was doing ok until the pandemic,”, he wrote. “Staying inside for over a year destroyed him. He’s not the same witty, goofy man he once was. He’s a shell of his former self.”

As we approach the Yomim Tovim, a time when we ask Hashem (G-D) for His mercy, I can’t help but think of the Holocaust survivors suffering among us. HEI has partnered with Nachas Health Network, an incredible nonprofit organization in Brooklyn that is singularly devoted to helping survivors live out their days in dignity, to collect cash donations for those who are most in need.

Help Holocaust Survivors Heal and Thrive
It’s been 78 years since the Holocaust ravaged the lives of so many and robbed them of everything they knew and loved. There are now precious few Holocaust Survivors remaining - heroes who single-handedly turned the destruction defining their lives into rebuilding and regrowth. As they age and face yet more loss as spouses and friends pass away, debilitating health challenges and often poverty, it gets harder and harder for them to go on. Many sit at home wrapped in loneliness, completely isolated from connection and support.

Nachas Health and Family Network is determined to change that - and reach as many Holocaust Survivors as possible with support, warmth and uplifting connection. For 6 years, Nachas Health has sent Holocaust Survivors on a healing, transformative retreat in the tranquil beauty of the Catskills Mountains. Survivors have connected with other Survivors and forged new connections, gaining the strength and joy to face the challenges of the year ahead.

Every year, we face the challenge to send all the many Survivors who desperately need the retreat. How can we say no to any Survivor reaching out and begging us for help, pleading for an opportunity to go on the retreat and raise their dejected spirits? Every single donation will go directly towards a Holocaust Survivor to experience the healing of peer support and therapeutic groups for a week in the healing environs of nature. They would otherwise be sitting home utterly alone.

We’ve had Survivors who had been inside their small apartments for years, never stepping outside, walk outside for the first time in years to come to the retreat. It has changed their lives - and encouraged them to keep connecting and being part of a warm and loving community throughout the year. A Survivor’s child called us to let us know that her mother’s home was always dark and silent, that she never even wanted to turn on the lights - but after the retreat, her mother now has new friends, is part of the vibrant community, and her home is full of music, light and laughter. She comes to events and therapeutic groups daily at Nachas now, instead of spending her final years alone in darkness.

The retreat is life-changing for so many survivors. “It gives me the chizuk (strength) to go on all year,” a Survivor told us tearfully. Can you help us transform the lives of so many Survivors, filling their year with light, friendships and joy?

This year, we all struggled with loss, fear and uncertainty, as Covid took over our world and changed everything. For Holocaust Survivors with no family, the isolation made it brutal.

Social support and connections were stripped away, and Survivors who had already suffered terrible traumas in their lives, were forced to face this scary time period all alone.

For the past five years, Nachas Health has been sending Holocaust Survivors to a beautiful hotel in upstate New York, for a tranquil retreat. There, they have the chance to relax in a setting far away from the stress of the city, reconnect with other Survivors, and recharge for the coming year.

Gift Holocaust Survivors a Life-Changing Retreat
For Holocaust Survivors, life has never been easy. Survivors today saw their world go up in flames when they were young and should have been carefree, losing everything and everyone they knew, loved and cherished.

They fought with all the strength they had to survive, live and rebuild.

As Survivors age, they are faced with devastating losses and new challenges. Many Survivors struggle every day, the life they worked so hard to rebuild from the ashes threatened with the loss of family members and friends to old age, loneliness and isolation setting in, and having to rely on others for food.

There is a lifeline they cling onto throughout the harsh winter months that take a toll on their physical health, through the grief and suppressed trauma floating to the surface, through the challenges of age and frail health. The annual retreat just for Survivors.

For a few days, they get to be carefree. Ensconced in the love and care of devoted counselors and empathetic peers, they recharge, heal and blossom. They also forge new connections, deep bonds and lifelong friendships with other Survivors who understand exactly what they’re going through.

At the retreat they are uplifted, celebrated and embraced. Nachas Health takes Survivors on an amazing retreat to an accessible and senior-friendly resort nestled in the serene Catskills mountains. Survivors can breathe in the fresh country air and are lavished with group therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and exercises designed specifically for seniors with arthritis and limited mobility.

One of our Survivors anxiously contacted us to make sure he was going to the retreat this year. We assured him that he was coming , and he was ecstatic. He tearfully thanked us, sharing, “You have no idea what those few days do for me. It gives me the strength to go on for the whole year.”

We are so close to our goal of making sure every Survivor who can come will attend the retreat! Thanks to generous sponsors, we can take 25 Survivors to the retreat.

There are many Survivors who wait for the retreat all year, who count on the experience to keep going on through the rest of the year, but we don’t have the funds for them. How can we turn them down and deny them this experience? We are urgently trying to fundraise so we can take all Survivors who long to experience connection, belonging and healing.

Help us help Survivors, and gift Survivors with a healing haven and comforting space to get the strength to face their hardships with the precious memories of joy and connection. Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness.
