Essential Equipment: Cell Sorter
Curing Multiple Sclerosis ("MS") is Dr. Jeffrey I. Greenstein's life’s work.
MS is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system. The attacks cause an increasing degree of neurodegenerative damage over time allowing disease progression, and limiting the bodies ability to recover after each attack.
As you know, MS not only changes the lives of those affected by it, but it also touches the lives of their families and friends. Dr. Greenstein's mission in founding the Multiple Sclerosis Research Institute (“MSRI”) is to FIND the cause, STOP the progression and CURE the disease so that those with MS, as well as future generations, can enjoy a life free from its symptoms.
The mission of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Institute (MSRI) is to perform the highest quality laboratory-based research. However, state of the art research is expensive and we need your help in order to purchase a new Cell Sorter.
The purpose of the Cell Sorter is to separate different populations of lymphocytes or other immune cells from a complex mix. It can help isolate unique cells with the ability to modulate immune responses. The cells are reacted with a panel of fluorescent labelled antibodies to various proteins on the cell surface and then sorted. The machine can determine whether or nor the cell has the required characteristics and then separate these fro the other cell with high purity. It can also sort single cells which allows us to probe unique characteristics of a particular cell within the population we are investigating.
Unfortunately we don't have one and our research would be able to advance greatly with this capability.
The research at MSRI focuses on developing a clearer understanding of fundamental mechanisms of the etiology and pathogenesis of MS. In addition, new therapeutic approaches to the disease and its complications are being carried out.
The basic laboratory research focuses on the following areas:
Investigating regulation of the immune response and impairment of these responses which cause the occurrence of autoimmunity in MS. The major initial emphasis is placed on improving the understanding of the role of regulatory T cells in the etiology and pathogenesis of MS.
Decoding the mechanisms by which an activated immune system causes damage to myelin and axons.
Development of innovative therapeutic responses to treat MS.
Development of diagnostic tests to diagnose and to monitor MS.
