The Humanities Society - School for Children with Special Needs
This school for children ages 7-23 was begun after the Bosnian War to serve children with special needs. Prior to this, these children had no opportunities for education – they were kept at home.
For four days beginning May 14, 2014, the Balkan region received the most rain recorded in more than 120 years. The city of Maglaj, where the school is located, received two months worth of rain in two days. Massive flooding resulted in the destruction of several towns, more than 2,000 landslides, the deaths of at least 62 people, and the displacement of more than 40,000 from their homes.
This special school was devastated. While the building still stands, the interior was completely flooded. Rivers of mud flowed throughout. Everything in the school – from exercise and therapy equipment and furniture to school records and computers - had to be discarded.
The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees has a special connection with the people of Bosnia and this school. Over the years we have helped more than 5,000 Bosnians resettle into new lives in Utica, New York. In turn, our Bosnian community has worked hard and helped spur a revitalization of our city. The School for Children with Special Needs has, as Chairman of their Board of Directors, the brother-in-law of one of our staff members.
We want to help. You can help, too. All money raised through this effort will go directly to the school in Maglaj. As you can see from the pictures, they need to replace everything from tables and chairs, to therapeutic equipment to office furniture and computers. The effort and cost will be substantial and will be long term.
