The Milford Log Cabin needs your help!

Did you know? In 1832, Elizur and Stanley Ruggles founded Milford at a spot where the Huron River and Pettibone Creek meet. They constructed a sawmill and a small community named Milford was formed as settlers from New York and New England navigated the newly constructed Erie Canal, arrived in Detroit, and began forming settlements up and along the Grand River and Pontiac Trails.

These settlers persevered through freezing Michigan winters and learned to settle and farm the rugged, overgrown lands of Milford. They fought off wolves and bears and the elements, they interacted with local Natives, and they survived with their families in small cabins just like the one that stands in our current South Side Park.

Constructed on the site of the original public square (on W. Huron St, next to the Fire Station), the Milford Log Cabin is built to exact historical standards and is maintained by the Milford Historical Society. It has been almost 40 years (!) since the log cabin was last updated, and it desperately needs some patching.

In addition to sponsoring the Milford Independence Day Parade, Granny's Attic Sale, the Home Tour, a monthly speaker series, and membership events and programming, the Milford Historical Society maintains and operates the Milford Historical Museum, truly a great gift that our community is fortunate to have.

Our small team of unpaid volunteers dedicates countless hours to these events and programming and to cataloging and teaching our local history, and we survive off the generosity of folks like you!

Every dollar you donate will go toward the Log Cabin, which is in desperate need of a new cedar shingle roof, a new flagpole, preserving and maintaining the authentic log siding, and repairs to the fence and grounds. Our community is vibrant and strong, and we thank you in advance for all the support you can provide!
