The Walter M. Roberts III Fund
In concert with what would have been Walter’s 64th birthday, Walter’s Friends and the Michigan Classical Consortium (MCC) announce:
The Walter M. Roberts III Fund
to assist deserving students from Detroit who are pursuing college or graduate level study of Greek and Latin or Classics writ large.
Walter’s story. Walter was born and raised in Detroit. His father was a doctor, but died when Walter was quite young, and his mother, a homemaker, then had to fend for three small children by herself. The importance of education was high in the family, and through scholarships and other aid Walter attended the best schools throughout his life. (Catholic Central High School; Columbia College: BA in Philosophy and Greek (summa cum laude); University of Chicago: MA in Philosophy; University of California at Berkeley: MA in Latin and Ph.D. in Classics). Nonetheless, Walter often survived on a shoestring that most of his faculty or fellow students never suspected. This fund aims to reach students like Walter.
The Michigan Classical Consortium (MCC), founded in 1895, is comprised of a community of Michigan teachers engaged in promoting the study of classics at the secondary and post-secondary level. Walter’s Friends believe this is the organization best suited to administer The Walter M. Roberts III Fund. The MCC will act on recommendations from instructors and petitions from continuing college graduate students, and will support such needs as the purchase of textbooks; food/lodging/counseling needs; study abroad (through a recognized program), etc.
Should you care to contribute, MCC is a registered 501c3 organization, so your donation will be tax-deductible. The fund has been set up as an endowment, so we will be able to support students in perpetuum.
If you still write them, you may send checks earmarked for “The Walter M. Roberts III Fund”, but contact me directly for details.
