Hi, I’m Valerie Moon, a nursing student at Baylor University whose journey from childhood adversity to future ICU nurse is rooted in faith and compassion. After growing up in a large, blended family and overcoming years of instability, I found my calling through volunteer work with children, the homeless, and nursing home residents.

This summer, I’ll travel to Madagascar as one of the first students in Mercy Ships’ new nursing program, The Mercyship, where I’ll support patient care aboard a hospital ship and witness global healthcare in action. I hope to bring the same empathy and advocacy I needed as a child to every patient I will care for.

I’m raising funds for Mercy Ships, a global charity that has been delivering hope and healing to those in need since 1978. Operating a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations, Mercy Ships follows a 2000-year-old model of compassion and care, mobilizing people and resources to bring essential medical services to the poorest communities.

Hi, I’m Caroline Gutierrez — a nursing student with a heart for service and a mission to make a difference. I’ve been given the incredible opportunity to join Mercy Ships, a global charity that provides free, life-changing surgeries to people in Africa who otherwise have no access to healthcare.

This summer, I’ll serve aboard the Africa Mercy in Madagascar as part of Mercy Ships’ inaugural Student Nursing Program, where I’ll support medical missions and grow as a caregiver and cross-cultural nurse.

A little about me:

I’m a rising senior nursing student at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. My journey hasn’t been easy — I’ve overcome ADHD, early substance abuse, and now walk proudly in recovery, four years sober.

I enjoy serving as a Resident Assistant on my college campus, learning in the clinical field with my nursing classmates, I love flowers and everything nature-focused, fostering my wonderful friendships, and spending valuable time with my loving family. My Catholic faith and passion for helping others have led me to pursue a career in nursing, where I hope to specialize in labor and delivery. Now, I feel called to serve on this mission of hope and healing.

Hi, I'm Tom Strandwitz, and I am a recent graduate of the Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Texas Christian University. I'm raising funds for Mercy Ships, a global charity that has been operating a fleet of hospital ships that deliver essential medical care in developing nations since 1978.

This summer, I have the amazing opportunity to deliver care aboard the Africa Mercy in Madagascar, helping to provide life-changing surgeries, train local health professionals, and support community health initiatives with essential supplies and resources.

Fundamentally, I believe healthcare is a human right and that my purpose is to be the one delivering that care in the most direct and tangible way possible. Healthcare for all includes our most vulnerable brothers and sisters all over the globe, and I'm proud to be supporting an organization like Mercy Ships with such an unwavering commitment to ensuring those with the least reliable access to care get what they need.

I’m Eric, a nursing student at Belmont Abbey College with a heart for service and a calling rooted in faith. I was raised in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and my path to nursing began after a spiritual turning point and a heartfelt realization that I was made to care for others. I was inspired by my emergency room nurse cousin and driven by a deep sense of compassion, and I was one of the first students selected for Mercy Ships’ Student Nursing Program, The Mercyship.

This summer, I’ll travel to Madagascar to support patient care aboard a hospital ship and witness firsthand how healing goes beyond the physical. I hope to work in emergency medicine and eventually become a nurse practitioner to serve even more patients with skill, empathy, and purpose.

Mercy Ships has been providing life changing surgeries since 1978 and I am honored to take part in this mission this summer. By donating you are helping me become a part of this amazing journey and becoming a part of it yourself. Healthcare is a human right and something Mercy Ships is bringing to those who do not have access to it like we do.

What drew me to Mercy Ships:

“I want to gain a new perspective—not just put myself in someone’s shoes, but actually walk where they walk and learn what they live.”

I’m Emma, a nursing student at Belmont Abbey College with a heart for global service and a faith-driven approach to care. I was inspired by childhood experiences with hospitalized family members and the example of a Mercy Ships surgeon, so I’m pursuing a career in NICU nursing. This summer, I will join Mercy Ships’ pilot program, The MercyShip, spending two weeks in Madagascar to support patient recovery, shadow volunteer nurses, and deepen my understanding of how faith and care intersect on a global scale.

Mercy Ships began their mission to provide hope and healing to those in need in 1978. Each year, they send hospital ships filled with volunteer medical professionals who selflessly provide life-changing surgeries to

children and adults who otherwise would go without. Together, they are saving lives.

For our wedding this June, we are forgoing a traditional registry and instead raising money to benefit Mercy Ships.

 

Mercy Ships is a global faith-based charity that has operated a fleet of hospital ships serving developing nations since 1978. The organization provides free healthcare, support, and a wide range of services primarily focused in Sub-Saharan Africa.

 

It is truly a fantastic organization, and one that Ben has a strong personal connection to having grown up aboard two of the ships from 1996 - 2002.
