Right now, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to protect one of California’s last wild oceanfront treasures is slipping away.
We live in the small village of Albion, directly across from the Albion Headlands — 84 acres of windswept bluffs, rolling hills, and over a mile of rugged coastline. This is one of the last undeveloped stretches of the Mendocino Coast… and its fate will soon be decided.
If we act together, it can be saved for the public. If we don’t, it could be turned into private mansions and fenced off — forever.
Why This Matters
Albion is one of the only towns on the Mendocino Coast without public headlands. Right now, unless you trespass, you can’t walk these bluffs, watch the whales, or see the sunset from here.
But the Mendocino Land Trust — a nonprofit with a decades-long track record of preserving our coast — has a plan to buy the property outright, protect it permanently, and open it for everyone to enjoy. That means:
- Public trails along the bluff tops
- Unobstructed ocean views for all
- Sunset lookouts you can drive or hike to
- A living refuge for wildlife and native plants
Imagine standing at the cliff’s edge, the wind in your hair, the Pacific stretching endlessly before you… and knowing this view is safe forever.
The Urgency
The Albion Headlands are on the open market right now for $6.95M. Developers are eyeing it as 16 private residential parcels. Once sold to private hands, public access will be lost for good.
The Land Trust believes the state may cover about half the cost, but the rest has to come from private donations — from people like you, who understand the value of open land and wild coastline.
Every single contribution — no matter the size — brings us closer to keeping this land public. This is truly a community vs. luxury development moment.
What Your Donation Will Do
Your donation will provide support to MLT’s work on the Albion Headlands project, which may include MLT staff time, outreach, acquisition costs, and stewardship funding. If we succeed, the land will be preserved for hiking, wildlife, and breathtaking views — not just for our small village, but for anyone who visits the Mendocino Coast, now and for generations to come.
This Is Our Only Chance
Once it’s gone, it’s gone. But if we act together, we can give the Albion Headlands back to the people, where it belongs.
We need you. We need your friends. We need everyone who has ever stood at the edge of the ocean and felt how rare and sacred these places are.
Please donate today. All donations are tax-deductible. Share widely. Help us save the Albion Headlands — for everyone, forever.
