CRISIS FUND: St. Joseph Clinic, Haiti
In recent months, the world has witnessed the coronavirus cripple health systems in the world’s wealthiest countries. The potential devastating impact it will have on those living in Haiti - the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere - is difficult to imagine. Now more than ever, united in global suffering, it is time to extend our fellowship and support to vulnerable communities affected by this pandemic.
On April 4th, we received news that St Joseph Clinic in Thomassique, Haiti suffered an electrical fire causing ~$200,000 worth of damages to materials (critical solar panels, batteries, electrical equipment). This equipment was critical to keeping the medical facility powered and operating during this vital time.
Since 2007, St. Joseph Clinic has brought essential medical services to a population of over 125,000 people living in one of the poorest regions of Haiti, the Central Plateau. Built and funded by Virginia-based non-profit, Medical Missionaries, the clinic is the only permanent medical center serving the city of Thomassique and the surrounding region. Over the years, it has been a refuge in times of crisis--operating through several hurricanes, the 2010 earthquake, and the cholera outbreak that followed. However, the coronavirus will pose challenges unlike anyother the clinic has previously faced. With cases rising in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the staff at St. Joseph Clinic currently face tremendous shortages of the essential medications and personal protective equipment needed to effectively combat the outbreak if and when it reaches Thomassique.
The clinic is in desperate need of emergency funding to continue providing medical services. 100% of the money raised will go directly to St. Joseph Clinic’s crisis relief fund.
