Planter Wall at MMCC - Eagle Scout Project
This project is taking place at Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, CA. If you are a sick or injured seal or sea lion, where do you go for help? Marine Mammal Care Center! MMCC is a seal and seal lion hospital that admits over 350 patients per year. MMCC delivers care to our patients while maintaining their wild nature so they may be released after rehabilitation.
This small planter wall is important for us to have constructed, as the soil in this area is compacted and trampled often due to people standing on the hillside, so plants don’t grow well. This wall will help prevent people from walking on the hillside and allow plants to flourish there in the future. Also, runoff from the hillside dirties the sidewalk and makes the slope lose soil. The planter wall will also help tidy up the area. Most importantly, we want MMCC to have a professional look to match the professional care we give, and this project will help provide that.
So what is this planter wall? A Planter wall will be built on the east side of the enclosure/building of Marine Mammal Care Center. In the more trafficked areas, such as where the enclosure is, it will be 18 inches high with trex (smooth composite material) on top. In less trafficked areas, such as the sidewalk area next to the building (look at pictures), it will be 6 inches high. It is being constructed using landscape ties (treated lumber), with rebar drilled inside for strength. It will also be held by fence post segments cemented into the ground to ensure it doesn’t move. Additionally, there will be a PVC pipe on the back for ease of watering. In total, it will be just over 130 feet long.
Samuel Perkins, a life scout from Boy Scouts of America Troop 948, located in Torrance, CA, is organizing and leading the construction of this planter wall. He is doing this as his Eagle Scout Project, and is coordinating this effort with MMCC’s Chief Operations & Education Officer, Mr. Dave Bader. The project's construction is scheduled for August 20th and 21st, from around 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It may also extend to the 27th and 28th if Samuel Perkins needs more time to finish it.
With such a big project, we need your help! The funds raised will go directly to MMCC, then they will be used to purchase the required materials for the planter wall project. These materials include landscape ties, trex, rebar, fence posts, PVC pipes, and more.
Here are some pictures of the site in its current condition:
After the project has been built, the wall should look something like this (without all that dirt behind it):
