In the summer of 2009 my life changed forever when I made the decision it was time to adopt and bring home my best friend Dexter. After spending months contemplating the decision, researching dogs, looking for the right one I came across a beautiful boy named “Lane” who was at the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter in Manistee Michigan. At the time I was living in Grand Rapids which was about a 2 hour drive. I had come across his profile on petfinder.com and fell in love with him. I knew he was the right one for me.
On June 10, My sister and I took the journey up there and got to meet him for the first time. He was just a happy boy that was just as excited to meet me. I took him for his first walk around the property and knew he was the dog for me so we signed paperwork, paid the $75 fee and brought him home. He was full of energy and excited to be just going on an adventure with these unknown people. After a full day of excitement and adventure, he finally settled in the apartment and laid down. I have a photo of him which I always say is one of my favorite ones of him where he is just stretched out and relaxed in our quiet apartment. Everything he had been through living at the shelter, this was that moment he said in his head “I’m home.” I promised him I would always be there for him and always take care of him never giving up on him.
Dexter became my best friend bringing as much adventure to my life as I did to his. He was my first dog that was all mine. I learned basic training techniques, developed a bond with him and never realized how close of a bond you could have with a dog. He has lived with me in 3 states (including all the way in Hawaii) and 6 different residences. He has brought so much joy into my life and has always been there for me. During the majority of my adult life he has been the number one consistent being and I’m so grateful to still have him here with me today.
Who would have ever thought I would be fortunate enough to have him by my side for 15 years! As I knew this was a big milestone year I wanted to do something special to honor it and thank the shelter who initially brought “Lane” in from being a stray running around the woods. I am doing a fundraiser to support the Manistee County Humane Society also known as the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter. All money raised during this fundraiser will go directly to support their efforts in rescuing and helping animals in the county. In honor of the $75 fee I paid for Dexter I would like to try and reach the goal of $7500! I’m going to kick it off myself with putting in my own $500.
To also mark this memorable occasion, we will be taking Dexter up to Manistee (through our own money) to visit the shelter and present in person. Just a great way to bring it all home and give him a fun solo adventure where he is the center of attention!
