For over forty years, Manhood Training Rites of Passage Inc., (MTROP) has run a cultural education and leadership development program for young men aged 12-17 in Washington, DC.
We work diligently to empower the young men of our community. One of our guiding principles is the adage, “He who wants to be King in the future must first learn to serve.” Our program instills the meaning and wisdom of this message into our participants by teaching them the importance of creating change in their communities, engaging in meaningful community service, and positively contributing to society, locally and globally. Your donation would greatly assist us in achieving these goals. Your donation would bolster this work in many ways.
Transportation:
Transportation services would help us to safely travel throughout the DC metro area more effectively. Your donation would allow us to fully fund our transportation needs for the year. Working collaboratively, we could make a meaningful and tangible difference in the lives of families East of the River, who have been historically underserved and disenfranchised.
Marketing:
We currently use our own personal resources to market the Rites of Passage process using our website and social media presence. Your donation would help us to further expand and grow our program using curated video content that would capture our program in action and allow supporters to see the value of what we do for the community. Each time that we travel throughout DC we would be able to bring a videographer with us in order to accomplish this.
Uniforms:
We provide uniforms to our youth so that we can be easily identifiable and so that we can teach them important lessons about the importance of dressing to impress. Your donation would enhance this effort greatly and provide supplemental uniforms as the boys are often in the middle of growth spurts during our program.
Classroom & Curriculum Activities:
Your donation would also enhance our classroom and curriculum activities that introduce our youth to themes centered around mental, physical, and emotional development. We currently use printing services to print our monthly lessons. These monthly lessons are incorporated into a more formal workbook that our boys can keep and use as a resource after they matriculate through our program.
Journey to Africa:
The culmination of our process is the journey to Ghana, West Africa. Every program cycle, we take the boys on a journey to Ghana where they receive the life-changing experience that exposes them to cultures and customs far different from their own. Many of the boys in our program are venturing out of the country (and sometimes out of the DC area) for the first time through our program. This event has changed the lives of many young men, as the value of reconnecting with heritage and history cannot be overstated. Upon returning from our last journey, the young men shared how they developed more discipline, confidence, perseverance, and better conflict resolution skills, as well as a deeper sense of self. We teach them the principles of entrepreneurship and the value of hard work all in our efforts to raise funds for this experience.
