Over the last few years, I’ve developed a personal endeavor to ride my bike around the perimeter of every county and county-equivalent city in Virginia, naming the effort Project Traverse.
That’s all well and good, but I want this project to be about more than a guy riding his bike in beautiful places. It could be something much more meaningful - an opportunity to do some tangible good and support the communities that I have been so lucky to visit.
I’ll be donating a dollar per mile for each Traverse ride to an organization making positive change on the local level. Over the course of this lifetime project, that will amount to roughly $16,000, spread across all of Virginia. Certainly better than nothing, but with your help, we could do so much more.
Please consider joining me in contributing any amount, as 100% of all donations will go to the listed charity, and every little bit helps. Together, we can support our neighbors and ensure that Virginia is as beautiful to live in as it is to bike through.
The most recent Traverse was in beautiful Madison County, Virginia, where the Madison Free Clinic, as the name implies, delivers free, quality healthcare to uninsured or otherwise underprivileged members of the community.
Their services include everything from dental and vision care to non-narcotic prescription administration and financial aid counseling. This is a critical public service, particularly in a county where roughly 10% of the population falls under the poverty line.
The Madison County Free Clinic deserves all the support we can muster, and as the Traverse was 122.5 miles, I will be donating $123 in turn. Please consider joining me with any amount you can spare, and help support free healthcare for your neighbors in Madison, Virginia!
