Send Urgent Aid to Lwiro - Keep chimps safe from conflict
As war and violence continue in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, sanctuaries come under fire.
The Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Center, a safe haven for orphaned chimpanzees, has faced severe difficulties since the war started and is now at serious risk. We feel compelled to share their story and appeal to our community to stand by them during this difficult time. Please, read their words, understand their fears, and support their hope.
Sadly, the war in our region is not over. In fact, things are getting worse.
The area surrounding Lwiro has turned into a battlefield. The nearby village where we purchase food for the animals is now under constant fire. Many of our staff live there, but have been forced to flee their homes and shelter in place at the sanctuary.
Recently, the conflict came far too close. Armed individuals entered the sanctuary grounds in broad daylight and opened fire nearby. Staff were forced to flee, animals were frightened, and the experience was deeply unsettling.
Our team continues to show up each day with courage and compassion – their dedication a powerful reflection of their commitment. Even in the face of war, they refuse to stop caring for the animals who depend on them.
But the conflict has affected every part of daily life. Food is increasingly scarce, and prices have soared. Fuel is limited. Supply routes are frequently disrupted. Despite these obstacles, we are doing everything in our power to keep the animals fed, healthy, and secure. Resources may be stretched thin, but our commitment to their lives is unwavering.
As conditions worsen, we are turning to our global community for help. Your support can help us meet the rising costs caused by the conflict and ensure our rescued chimpanzees continue to receive the care they need.
