STEM Education at Chicago Vocational Academy
Like many of you, I'm blessed to have had many educational privileges, including an abundance of excellent science, math, and computer science classes and teachers. It's not the case for everyone, particularly not for many kids in Chicago, where all too often, the stories of our youth are about poverty punctuated by violence.
Lumity provides educational, career, and social-emotional intelligence programs to the youth of Chicago, and helps our kids rewrite their narratives. This year, we're partnering with the Chicago Vocational Career Academy (CVCA) on Chicago's South Side to provide programs including:
* In-class, interactive lessons based on the Code.org curriculum
* Real-world projects where students work with corporate mentors to learn and leverage teamwork and STEM skills to solve challenges.
* STEM courses, where students design and launch their own STEM-based business, earning high-school credit.
In spite of coming from economically challenged homes and exposure to gangs and gun violence, the CVCA students are striving to become our future leaders. They are innovative, creative, risk-taking, passionate, honest and coachable.
With your support, I'm raising $3,000 so CVCA sophomores can have the funding and educational resources to implement a real-world project and have the winning teams compete in Lumity's annual STEM Fair on March 14, 2019. It's an inspirational culmination of hard work, where teams present their elevator pitches to a panel of judges and 400 guests!
I appreciate you taking a minute to watch the attached video, and to contribute in the amount right for you! I'll keep you posted once the program gets launched as a result of your support.
Thank you!
Eric
