Los Gatos Rowing Club

The Los Gatos Junior Rowing Program is committed to developing young athletes to compete and excel at local, national, and international levels. Last year, we achieved remarkable success in the Southwest region, sending 57 athletes across 14 crews to the Youth National Championship. Twelve of those crews placed in the top 8 in the country, with three winning Gold medals, two earning Silver, and one securing Bronze. This was our most successful year to date!

For 45 years, LGRC has fostered a positive environment where our athletes grow into responsible and compassionate individuals, preparing them not just for rowing but for college and beyond. Each year, we raise funds to support our junior program and acquire essential equipment, ensuring we can continue to provide world-class rowing opportunities.

Our program draws athletes from over 25 different schools in the area, many of them go on to be recruited and row in college. Last year, our junior program qualified 10 boats to the USRowing National Championship. 8 of those crews placed in the top eight in the country. We won silver medals in the Men's Youth quad, the Womens coxlees four, and the mens coxless four. We also had athletes compete at the Henley Royal Regatta and the Junior World Championships. After this year’s Youth National Championship, two members of the silver medal Men’s Youth 4x (Jonas Thieme and Alberto Lasso) raced trials for the opportunity to represent America at the Junior World Championships!

Although Jonas and Alberto primarily sculled all year, they proved to be a great pair, prevailing over a Saugutuck/Maritime composite crew and another crew from PNRA/Mercer by utilizing an aggressive start to push out to about 8 seconds up on the field at the 1000m mark. Luckily the boys were able to defend their lead from a strong move by Saugutuck/Maritime in the final stages of the race punching their bow across the line first!

The trip to Varese will not be cheap for Juniors Alberto Lasso and Jonas Thieme. We are trying to fundraise for airfare, lodging, entry fees, and training while in Rome before joining the rest of the junior team in Milan!

Alberto and Jonas (& their coach, Channing) want to thank the LGRC community, in particular the Mens Squad, Kieran, Rick, TJ, Jaime, Matt P, Matt K, Ian, and the rest of the LGRC coaching staff for helping the boys cross the line first on Tuesday and helping us get to Varese at the end of July. Every year, the Los Gatos Rowing Club's Varsity Women hosts a fundraiser to buy new boats, ergometers, oars, weights and coaching launches. Our program has over 40 athletes and we compete at the state, regional and national level.  Just this past month, the varsity women sent 17 athletes to compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, MA and placed 6th and 9th, 49, and 32 in the Youth single, Youth Coxed quad, Youth 8+ and Youth 2x, respectively.  Our goal this year is to raise over $25,000 that directly benefits our program as we seek to qualify crews to the National Championships in the Spring of 2022.  Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause.
