Relaunch the Big Pink Bus!
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers women face. One in 8 women will be diagnosed in her lifetime, though various risk factors can raise this to one in two. In Central Texas, most of the fixed sites where mammograms are available are near I-35. This leaves tens of thousands of women without a local mammogram provider.
Before its cancellation in early 2018, the Big Pink Bus was a trusted mammogram provider, allowing high-risk women to be screened conveniently. The women the Bus will reach have more risk factors for breast cancer overall, and specifically for later-stage diagnosis. By restarting the Bus, we can provide access to high-quality cancer screenings to high-risk women across the region.
Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, only about 6% of women are receiving their mammograms on schedule. Many women who need mammograms are worried about going to a clinic that provides other medical services for fear of being exposed to the coronavirus. The need for accessible, safe mammograms has never been higher.
When diagnosed at stage I, women have a 99% chance of surviving breast cancer. By stage IV, this rate drops to 27%. While regular mammograms can reduce breast cancer mortality by 25%, this does not begin to describe the difference between cancer treatment at stage I vs. stage IV. By identifying cancers earlier, the screenings provided by the Big Pink Bus reduce physical pain, financial burden, emotional stress, and family pressure. A clear screening provides peace of mind; an early diagnosis reduces suffering.
Through the dedicated perseverance of several local leaders, we have only $28,000 left to raise to get the Bus on the road. The sooner we can reach our goal, the sooner we can get The Big Pink Bus rolling again!
