Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation

We are raising money to benefit Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation Inc., an organization that aims to assist the community in areas surrounding Loisaba Conservancy in Northern Laikipia, Kenya.  Loisaba provides jobs, education opportunities and health care to our surrounding areas, and in doing so Loisaba has an excellent relationship with the neighboring communities. This has a positive effect on the safety and security of wildlife, and encourages an interest in conservation.

A recent survey of this community found that there is a need for additional medical care, especially for women.  To address limited access and to improve health outcomes for the community, we are raising funds to support outreach by the mobile health clinic and increase health education.   These funds will support one mobile clinic outreach per month ($200 per outreach) and weekly support of a local dispensary ($50 per day) for a year. 

With your help, the clinic will deliver much needed healthcare, including family planning information and assistance, empowering local women and supporting a rapidly growing population with limited resources to manage itself sustainably well into the future. 

Funds donated will go to  Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation, Inc. (LCCF), a 501c(3) qualified Charitable Trust.  LCCF does not take administration fees or costs associated with your donation. All funds raised go exactly where they are needed–to Loisaba. 


Challenge
Currently, there are very few clinics available to many of the communities surrounding Loisaba – only two out of five have one. This means many people have very limited access to health care, being several days walk from the nearest clinic. Loisaba currently holds a monthly outreach clinic in alternate communities which aims to see and treat as many people as possible. This is carried out by collected government supplied drugs from a pharmacy in a nearby town, and driving into the communities – providing medical care to over 1,500 people. These outreach clinics depend on if the pharmacy have the supplies in stock. If they do not, the team cannot host the outreach clinic and on those months, the people of these communities have no access to treatment. Furthermore, Loisaba does not currently have the infrastructure for these clinics – often treating patients in classrooms or on plastic chairs under the hot sun.


Solution - Mobile Health Clinic Vehicle
A fully equipped Mobile Health Clinic Vehicle would offer Loisaba a flexible and viable option for visiting and treating the most vulnerable communities to provide primary health care, including food security, water and sanitation, health promotion, preventative activities, curative services, rehabilitation and social assistance. The clinic could also store emergency drugs for occasions when the pharmacy is out of supply.


Long-Term Impact
The link between ‘benefits received by communities’ and ‘positive changes in attitudes and behaviours towards wildlife’ is a critical step in Loisaba’s mission. This clinic will improve perceptions of Loisaba, and therefore conservation in the surrounding populations, leading to reduced threats to biodiversity including bushmeat hunting, retaliation killings, grazing encroachment into the conservancy and many more. The clinic will also deliver family planning information and assistance, empowering local women and supporting a rapidly growing population with limited resources to managing itself sustainably. Total costs for the mobile clinic are $60,000 + $25,000 annual operating costs.
