Lincoln Middle School PTO

Lincoln Middle School PTO is raising money to provide scholarships for students of all backgrounds so that participation in our annual international service learning trip is a possibility for any motivated, determined student. Here is what just a few of our current applicants have to say about their hopes for this year's trip:

Being one of three children of a single Dad, I knew this trip was beyond my family’s ability to pay. My Dad works hard to support us, and on top of that, he goes to college part time. My teachers encouraged me to apply anyway, and helped me come up with some ideas to make money on my own. This trip is like nothing that anyone in my family has ever done. I want to go because I think that traveling is like walking into a whole new world- the culture, the food, the houses, there is so much to learn. Also, I get real joy from helping others. Before my Mom passed, she and I worked hard one summer to move rocks and plant some flowers in the yard for my little Grandma to look at as she sits outside each day. The smile on her face made me instantly forget the sweat and hard work, and I felt such happiness in her joy. I want to experience that by helping others in another country. Without a scholarship, this trip will not be possible for me.

I started my own fundraising efforts as soon as I heard I was accepted on the trip. I got paid for dog-sitting, yard work and shoveling snow in my neighbor’s yards. It has always been my dream to travel out of the country and see how other people live, so I was determined to do everything I could to help my parents with the cost of this trip. Then, this Spring, my entire family got COVID, Mom, Dad, my sister and me. We had it pretty bad and it was a scary time. The medical bills from that really pressed my parents’ savings and now money is tight in our house. We can afford to pay for some, but with a little more financial help, I will be able to make my dream a reality.

With the help of Lincoln Middle School PTO, the Global Leadership class is completing a service project aimed at raising money to create a laundry room on the school's campus for families in need.   The students are collecting funds to support necessary building maintenance adjustments to accommodate the laundry units, as well as for equipment including two washers and dryers, laundry soap, and supplies for a sitting area for families to wash their clothes in private.
