Help Save the Coachman's Sign!
"Vintage signs add beauty and character to our everyday world. Those designed in the early half of the 20th Century are unique because, though utilitarian, they are actually art pieces with their bright colors, graceful lines, interesting shapes, and bold lettering. Add some glowing neon or blinking bulbs and you really have a spectacle."
- Lisa Michele Church (Vintage Signs of Utah, Vol. 1)
The iconic Coachman's Pancake House sign is the source of nostalgia and adoration for many in our community. Whether you're a longtime Salt Lake resident who has fond memories of the diner where you could get a hearty meal for a fair price, a newer resident who recognizes the sign's prominence along State Street, or simply a vintage sign enthusiast - the glowing lantern, neon lettering, and sheer magnitude demand attention. Designed by the owner himself, it is fair to say that the Coachman's sign is one-of-a-kind, and there is nothing like it in the world!
We are grateful to Sapa Group for generously donating the sign to the Liberty Wells Community Council and allowing us the opportunity to search for a future home for the sign. Unfortunately, it cannot remain in its current location and must be removed by professionals before the end of July. While the sign itself is being donated, the cost to safely remove it, and further down the road, restore it, needs to be covered.
We are currently fundraising for Phase 1 of the project which is to remove the sign and have it placed safely in storage before the end of the month while we formalize plans for Phase 2, which will be restoring and placing it in a new location.
We know that many Salt Lakers beyond our Liberty Wells neighborhood have fond memories of Coachman's and share in our love for the iconic sign. Please help us get the word out to one and all to SAVE THE COACHMAN'S SIGN!
