The murder of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020 is just one example of the many cases of police brutality and other injustices that plague our nation. Not only did it ignite the necessary fire needed to promote change but it showed many people just how unjust and corrupt our policing system is.
On Saturday, June 6th, Myself, Thomas Audley, and James Errante, and anyone else who would like to join, will be running a mile every hour for 24 hours to help raise money for The Liberty Fund. Taken directly from their mission, The Liberty Fund is "dedicated to reducing the number of New Yorkers subjected to unnecessary pretrial detention while simultaneously providing much needed social services to this population."
This is incredibly important because, nationally, up to 62% of people behind bars have not been convicted. In New York City, that number is closer 75%. In most cases this is because they are unable to pay bail that would allow them to return to court. According to the Center for Court Innovation, only 13.9% of New Yorkers were able to afford bail before they were shipped by bus to Rykers Island.
Not only are people who are still presumed innocent being put behind bars, but they are 9 times more likely to plead guilty if they cannot afford bail, according to the Brooklyn Community Bail fund.
We hope that everyone is doing what they can to promote civil rights.
