Clean Beaches and Water Lake Havasu
In 2009 there was a growing awareness among concerned Lake Havasu boaters that the battle of clean beaches and a clean lake was being lost because of trash. To combat that trend, the Lake Havasu Marine Association instituted a complimentary “trash bag” program for the convenience of boaters.
The plan was simple, install trash bag posts on more than 60 beaches around the lake and fill them with rolls of free plastic trash bags. A team of dedicated LHMA volunteers make regular visits to keep posts well stocked for boaters and remove residual trash left behind. Boaters are encouraged to “pack it in, and pack it out” but that’s not always the case.
Up until 2020, the LHMA was able to self-fund this public service, buying the trash bags and absorbing the cost of operating the association’s work boat. Unfortunately, the cancellation of the 2020 Lake Havasu Boat Show (LHMA’s primary source of operating revenue) because of Covid 19 restrictions on large gatherings resulted in a significant budget shortfall. Thus, the ‘clean beaches/clean lake’ trash bag program along with other vital lake services like buoy maintenance had to be put on hold.
It’s evident that spring and summer Havasu boating activity will be one of the busiest ever. Reports from boaters are coming in troubled by excessive beach litter and empty trash bag posts.
We all care about clean beaches and clean water. Any and all donations to help get this program back into full operation is greatly appreciated. It’s the right thing to do. Thank you – your Lake Havasu Marine Association
