The Bernie Amigurumi Challenge
UPDATE #2: Bernie is done! The lottery will be held on Sunday, March 7...
UPDATE: Given the response... I've increased my goal to $500 and will match (with my own contribution... in addition to the challenge of making Bernie) any amount received up to this figure!

So... multiple people have sent me a photo of the crocheted Bernie meme and suggested this be my next project.
I've decided to turn it into a personal Bernie Amigurumi Challenge... at first I thought I would create a GoFundMe to pay for the pattern ($5) and supplies (yarn, plastic eyes, etc.) -- just for fun.
But then I decided to create a more interesting social experiment among my friends... I will pay the costs and put in the effort to try and crochet this thing if enough friends donate $100 to my selected charity. Anyone that contributes will have a chance (if you like) to put your name into a lottery to receive the final product. No guarantees that it will look as professional as the photo -- remember this is new hobby for me! It might be called "Messy Bernie" in the end (see FB post on Messy Cat" for reference).
My selected charity is Lake County Build A Generation (LCBAG). This month I became a Board member of LCBAG, a local grassroots organization dedicated to creating a healthy community for all Lake County residents -- through advocating for housing, food health, and other priorities of the community. I learned about LCBAG last year, volunteering to deliver food boxes to families in need during the Covid crisis. You can learn more about them here: http://lcbag.org/
We recently moved to Leadville -- in part because it was a diverse, down-to-earth community. LCBAG is an organization whose mission and values align with Bernie's fight for social justice. I am pretty sure he would approve of the use of his image for this purpose!
p.s. Pattern is from Tobey King, https://tobeytimecrochet.com/. Many thanks to her creativity!
