Sometimes we don't realize just how helpless they are. Cameron, caked in filth years-thick, engulfed with parasites, he wanted to leave; he just couldn't. Dogs, when given a choice, will escape a dangerous situation. But when they're cruelly chained to a post and forced to endure, day after day, an existence just like torture, they have no choice. As people, we know we can always just get up and walk out. Dogs can't. They rely on us for everything. Having that sort of total control carries the weight of enormous responsibility.

They cannot eat, sleep, run, play....or even breath, rest...love....without us. Consider that this Valentines Day where we celebrate love.


Love is silent. This deep, unwavering, unquestioned emotion gives compassion, sympathy, hope and care to those around you. It can be enormously gratifying as you receive this love back. Dogs are a magical creature that will give this gift to you without requiring much at all. It's heartbreaking to try to understand how people will not do the bare minimum to ensure at the very least, their safety much less love. But incredibly, dogs will even give you their love for practically nothing.


We are always in awe of their capacity for forgiveness and love. Take Begonia, for example. Trudging through her miserable living conditions, we can only think that she must have had hope. Hope that her situation would change, as she huddled with her 3 other companions, shut out and confined to a dirt square, without a roof to escape the pouring rainstorms. Without consistent food to fill their ribs. And surely, without love. Saying yes to her rescue she now takes refuge in a foster home where she is learning to trust again. And most importantly, receive unconditional love.


Did you know that we have already rescued more than 500 dogs since our 10,000th in November? Incredible as it may seem, we barely have the time to take notice. In what has been a whirlwind 3 weeks, we have seen more tragic neglect and medical emergencies than ever. Like Igloo. Seen on the streets alone, she had just given birth to her pups. Could we take her? Yes, of course, we replied. Returning to rescue her and her babies it was just minutes too late. She had been struck by a car and was in bad shape. Quickly getting her to our vets they did everything they could to save the new mom. Sadly, with injuries too severe she didn't make it, leaving her now orphaned pups on their own. In the care of a foster home, her tiny, sickly little babies required heat lamps to warm their small bodies and specialized, expensive nutrition to pull them through their tragic start.


Or Ladybug. At only 2 years old, hiding out on the streets alone – scared and pregnant. As she arrived to our rescue she delivered her pups premature, where it was discovered that she had a life threatening infection. Rushed to our vet, they performed surgery to try to save her life. Sadly her condition was too severe and her pups too would be orphaned. At only 1 week old they require hourly bottle feeding while being watched around the clock, as they are simply too young to care for themselves in any way.


Luckily we were able to rescue Bandana before she gave birth. Arriving covered in fleas and ticks, this underweight girl was in obvious pain as she carried her pregnancy with a broken hip. Then she gave birth. 8 hours and 9 babies later, she incredibly finds the strength to gently nurse and care for her newborns. Once they are weaned she will require FHO surgery to repair the break. Another very costly procedure.


Mange caught early can be easily treated. But mange left to run rampant can become severe infections. Young Zara, suffering from a serious case of neglect was not given the protection and care from her owners and her infestation became severe, giving way to a secondary illnesses. Saying yes to her rescue meant immediate emergency treatment and now prolonged medication and skincare.


And Ruffles.  Kept caged in someone's backyard, Ruffles was starved along with his friend.  Although we were able to rescue Ruffles, his friend was very weak.  Rushing him to our vets they did all they could do to save him.  But he was far too emaciated and could not recover.  Ruffles now in the care of a foster home, fights for his life as he beats back an illness.

Unfortunately if we do not have the funds to say Yes to cases such as these, the dogs are forced to deal with whatever horrendous situation they find themselves in. And sometimes we barely reach them in time.  At a moment where we think about what love really means and our commitment to that, we reach out to you to ask for your support.  As much as we wish the problem of cruelty and neglect was diminishing the sad fact is that it is not. Because we truly love all dogs we will continue to do what we can to save each and every one of them. We hope you will too.

We're here to save lives.

Through the years we've seen our share of cruel cases that make us shake our heads in dismay. That doesn't make it any easier though, especially when faced with dogs like Kenner. His story is one that cries out for simple human compassion.

While we are all snuggling up in warm homes this holiday, being loved by our family and loving on our own personal dogs, Kenner was out there alone – and barely alive.

Kenner's Story

We received his pictures one night and were told that he was found laying in the desert in this condition with a steel chain around his neck. As we inspected his photos closer we were horrified and sickened. His wounds appeared to be consistent with that of hot oil being poured over his head, running down the sides of his neck – burning his skin off and causing open flesh wounds.




But that wouldn't be all this guy would endure.  He was so weak from starvation and infested with parasites that he just laid there - but that too wasn't enough.  Someone left a cut off steel chain around his neck – and it was found hanging, deeply embedded, with cuts into his flesh. Was he abandoned? Did he ever have a home? Did someone torture him while he tried to find food to stay alive? How could a dog in this condition go unnoticed and be sentenced to perish in silence?




We have been celebrating the rescue of our 10,000th dog here at Labs & More. Sadly it doesn't end the stream of cruelty, neglect and the silent torture dogs we receive like Kenner go through on their own. Who will save them from certain death? Are they destined to endure an agonizing existence, not knowing which people would do them harm and which to trust? Our hearts break for Kenner because he, through absolutely no fault of his own, has had to brave a life of pain, fear and struggle. We knew that he deserved a chance at a normal life – and hoped we were not too late.


Kenner's Treatment

Kenner is now safely in our care and receiving emergency treatment. His obvious wounds are seriously infected and silent parasitic illnesses have set in, slowly eating away at him from the inside. We are working to get him stable enough so that he can withstand the surgery he requires to first close his open wounds. We have been advised that he will then require multiple following surgeries to repair the extensive damage.

Only then can he begin to heal the wounds we cannot see –  those that left him with a broken heart.




Please help us save Kenner's life. We know that with your help we will show him that people can extend a hand of kindness and help him get on the road to recovery. We look forward to the day where his ribs don't protrude and his scars fade. We want to see him snuggled up, safe, with a family of his own to shower him with love. Young Lasso came to us as many do. Broken, and without hope. Unfortunately when a dog ends up at a shelter with a broken leg such as this it's typically an automatic death sentence. Repairing a broken bone or even giving them an amputation can be very costly, and shelters simply don't fund this area of care. But Lasso didn't have just a broken leg – she had a broken hip. Things looked bleak.

Thankfully Labs & More got the urgent call for her rescue and said Yes. When we think a dogs' life can be saved by surgery we say Yes first and figure out how to cover the costs later. We, like you believe that every dog deserves a chance, and even more so when their injury is repairable. If we could give her FHO surgery she could go on to live a normal, active happy life. So that's what we did.

As Lasso has recovered in the loving home of a foster, we are now tasked with recovering the costs for her life saving surgery. Whether you can give $5 or $500, your generosity is what it takes to continue to say yes when others sadly must say no. Because a surgery such as this is expensive and costs run into the thousands, we always count on our supporters to help us carry the weight of this important work. Save dogs like Rilley, Avery and Coco.

From vaccinations and basic medications to intensive, life saving surgeries, your donations provide critical support.  We simply would not be able to rescue as many dogs as we do without your help.

Dogs like young Rilley, who was found cruelly chained to a fence and abandoned on the side of a freeway amongst the trash.  Left without food or water  – and not even enough chain length to lay down to rest.




Or puppies like Avery, who as just a baby spent his nights homeless, curled up tightly to try to stay warm on a filthy old mattress.  Discovered by himself living under a dirty building, with no mom in sight, we don't know how long this little guy had to scavenge for food and water.




Lives like little Coco.  Discovered with her mom who was emaciated and covered with mange.  By the time we were able to rescue mama & her pups, all but 2 of her babies had already perished.  Coco would surely have been next without your help.




Sadly there are just too many stories like these to share.  We've given them urgent medical attention and provided critical surgeries, necessary for their survival.  They have recovered from their wounds – now we need your help to recover the costs.

Hope's Story

This sweet little 12 week old puppy was discovered slowly wobbling on the side of the road, limping from side to side, and in pain. She was filthy, terrified, with multiple nicks and cuts. How did she end up there, without the care of her mother or her owners? A passerby noticed her sad plight, scooped her tiny, broken body up – and took her to a local shelter. The shelter immediately put out an urgent call: small puppy needs immediate rescue, injured and requires medical attention. We, as always, cannot turn our back on any dog needing care, especially that of such an innocent young life. We said yes and rushed her to our veterinarian.




As our volunteer picked her up, this little girl looked up at her – and bravely allowed herself to be held, trusting that she was now safe.   Although terrified she slowly relaxed and let our team handle her, safely settling her into a blanketed crate for transport to our veterinarian. During transport they noticed she could only drag her back legs, and that bones seemed to be sticking out from her back hips, making her legs splay outward as she tried to walk.  It broke our hearts to see her try so hard to move around the crate but always collapse in fatigue, unable to move herself in the way she wanted to.




This little puppy was just a sweetie to hold and her tiny brown and black markings and trusting disposition instantly warmed our hearts. Through no fault of her own she was found in a bleak situation, and within just hours of the help from total strangers she found herself in a new world full of hope. We named this tiny girl – our 10,000th rescue dog – Hope.  It was only appropriate, as she signifies all that we do as a dog rescue group, by saving those discarded lives that need just a sliver of hope, providing them the care & medical attention they need – then giving them a chance at finding a loving forever home of their own.  



Diagnosis & Treatment

Examined by our vets it was determined that the multiple bone fragments protruding from her rear legs were probably the result of injuries after being hit by a car. This made her unable to properly stand or walk, and were slowly healing incorrectly which would cause further irreparable damage.  Our veterinarians advised that she would require extensive and multiple surgeries to correct the injuries.  They were optimistic that with careful crate rest and care, sweet Hope would make a full recovery and would most likely go on to play again just like all little puppies should.

As always we rescue these broken lives first and figure out how to pay for their care after.  We can only do that with the support of fellow dog lovers like you.  Her surgeries & recovery care will be expensive, but we believe this little girl should have the chance to lead as normal and happy of a life as possible. Certainly we, as a community, can give this young puppy that.

You hope that when you get sick your loved ones will care for you. Unfortunately dogs don't get to have a say in their care, they're at the mercy of what humans will provide.

And that is just such the case for this 7 year old boxer. Dumped at a local shelter, upon check in they looked further and saw that this tumor was unlike any common, benign tumor. Moved to a medical facility for additional testing, the heartbreaking news was broken:  its severe - and its cancerous.



Sadly, typically this is a death sentence for shelter dogs. Most shelters find themselves without the means to provide life saving measures for cases such as these. Within days he was scheduled for euthanasia. Giving him a chance meant a rescue organization had to step up and take him in. We got the call – and said Yes.

What causes a 7 year old boxer to find himself dumped at a shelter with a horrifying tumor? Is it that his owners didn't have the means necessary to treat him? Or that they couldn't be bothered? Boxers are known to be some of the most devoted and loyal dogs – and with one look into his big eyes - it seems that he feels guilty for all the trouble he's caused. We were heartbroken at the idea that through no fault of his own, he found himself, scared - at deaths doorstep – and without his family by his side.


Arriving to Labs & More he was in rough shape and went straight into emergency care. Besides the huge, malignant tumor on his testicles, he was covered with multiple sores and wounds, plus lots of other skin issues. We quickly had the tumor removed and sent to the lab. Coming back with even more aggressive results that we had originally anticipated, the decision was made to go back in for a second surgery and remove even more of the surrounding tissue in hopes to stop the spread of the disease.

To make matters worse, during surgery he developed severe complications, with an infection and massive swelling that required a catheter to be inserted just so he could urinate.


2 surgeries later Kenny remains hospitalized in emergency care to monitor his recovery around the clock. Further testing and monitoring is required to ensure that every part of the tumor has been removed and does not return. 


We said Yes to Kenny, as always, without knowing what treatment will be required or how much that will cost - or where it will come from. We said Yes because we believe – like you do – that dogs are an integral part of our families and deserve the same sort of care we would give to our family members: the chance at life.

Please help us cover Kenny's costs;  for his 2 surgeries, multiple medical testing, ongoing hospitalization and emergency care.  Every little bit helps - and being a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit organization you can be assured that these dollars go directly to his care.

They don't ask for help.  They can't.  They just suffer silently and try to make do with what they have.  Which is usually nothing:  no food, no shelter, no clean water.  Not a bed to sleep in.  Not a caring hand to help them through the terrifying journey of birthing their young, while bravely trying to protect them from predators or worse - starvation - because even she can't find enough to survive.




Recently, within one single week and a half time span, we were overwhelmed with desperate pleas:  “We just found a newborn litter, help!”  “This pregnant mama is ready to give birth and is homeless – can you take her?”  “These puppies with their mom is being abused, can you rescue them?”  “This mama has lost 10 of her puppies and only has 2 left, can you take them all?”  As soon as we processed one there were 2 more waiting – and it seemed like it just wouldn't end.




By the end of those crazy 21 days we had saved and taken in 137 pregnant moms and puppies. - and that doesn't even count the other 70 or so adult dogs we rescued during that same time frame!  Now, we wondered, how will we pay for this?




Ever wonder what it takes to save just one litter?  There's medical testing, goats milk to supplement moms' milk, bedding, newspapers for them to mess in, towels, cleaning supplies, blankets, vaccinations, food...mountains of food... and specialized medical care – not to mention the loving foster homes that enable us to give them the fighting chance – or boarding fees when we're simply too full and have no place left to put them.




We've got the personnel covered, now we just need the funds.  We simply don't foresee and plan for bursts like these but we just couldn't look the other way and hope someone else would rescue them.  The harsh reality is that if we don't say yes most times they never receive rescue - and the cycle continues.

Every time we said yes to a plea we crossed our fingers and silently prayed that our supporters could come through.




If you're reading this we know you care.  And now we're asking for just a little bit more:  a donation.  These funds, no matter the size, go directly towards providing what it takes to rescue them off the streets, treat medical conditions, nurture them to health and ready for adoption these sizable, multiple families.  Between us we can turn their rough start around and change the direction of their lives forever.  That's huge.

Can you imagine starting your life in a drainage ditch? 

Sadly, it was the only safe place she could find to bear and nurse her puppies.  This is no way for babies like these to come into the world.

3 mama dogs were discovered in the streets nursing their newborn babies, homeless, hungry - and desperate.  We were contacted and asked if we could take them in.  With the severe rainstorm fast approaching, we immediately said yes even though our puppy fosters were full.

When they returned to rescue them all in the torrential downpour - they discovered the litter above, dangerously floating, with the water rapidly rising in the drain their mama was nursing them in. They were rescued just in time before some, if not all, of these puppies met certain death.





Amazingly during the rescue operation, yet another mama was found with her newborn babies - unbelievable! In less than 24 hours 4 litters were found with their mothers struggling to keep them alive - without regard for their own safety. Labs & More said yes to them all.




On the streets alone, clearly homeless, neglected and hungry, who knows how these mamas ended up in these desperate situations. Their young puppies deserve a better chance at a normal, healthy life - and we just couldn't say no to them.




Before the day would end we would take in 4 mothers and their numerous puppies. It was a harrowing night, and we are so thankful we are able to rescue them all.

These families are now safe. Their future is certainly already brighter with loving homes & families waiting to adopt them. Thankfully we CAN save dogs like these, but we are always relying on the generous spirit of our donors.

Let's work together to prevent stories like the above leading to the equally tragic stories of those like the 10 day old puppies tied into a bag, duct taped and dumped at Kit Carson Park in San Diego recently. Thankfully good samaritans exist and those puppies were discovered & saved - but many sadly are not. You CAN make a difference - by getting involved.

"This boy has a resilient spirit"

Idris is an 8 month old lab mix who has a deformed leg from a previous trauma. He needs our help to fund his orthopedic surgery to keep him running, swimming and walking on ALL four legs!

This guy is one tough cookie. He was hit by a car and had his leg degloved when he was just 4 months old. Dumped at a shelter and left for dead, all the skin and tissue was stripped off his limb with giant, dirty wounds. Labs & More thankfully was able to rescue Idris and begin to provide him with the best care in town. He survived multiple infections and has remained a happy, gentle soul throughout the painstaking daily dressing changes for his wounds. He is so patient through all of the care he has received, and surely knows he's been saved - and saved for a reason in this cruel world.


Today his wounds have healed but his leg requires an intricate, orthopedic surgery in order to straighten and fix the deformity that remained from his previous trauma. This conclusion was not made lightly, but through weeks of dedicated vet visits and rehab. Thankfully this procedure CAN save his leg, but it requires expert care and more financial resources than we normally can provide.


We're asking for your help to fund Idris' leg-saving surgery and give him the best future possible. He has already begun therapy dog training, and loves sharing kisses & 'dog hugs' with patients who find themselves, like him, in hard times.

BUCKY

Thankfully a good samaritan discovered this young baby boy after being hit by a car, both legs severely fractured, underbelly bloody with road rash, a sign of being dragged while being hit - and left for dead. Bucky ended up at a high kill shelter where most dogs in his condition are euthanized due to a lack of resources. He had just a few hours to be saved.

A local support group heard of Bucky's plight and put out a plea. We had but 2 hours to make a 1.5 hour drive to save him. Even with Labs & More's limited resources during the winter months where the demand is highest we acted, praying our supporters would come through when we needed them. Upon arrival we knew it wasn't good as he was unable to move or walk. The vets confirmed our fears - both legs were severely broken and emergency surgery was needed as infection was setting in. Within hours he was in surgery.

Bucky received FHO surgery on both sides. Although coming out of the surgery groggy, in severe pain, legs in casts and splints, he slowly dragged his body with his front paws towards the recovery team to receive kisses and comfort. Whimpering but stoic and still wobbly from surgery his first wish was to be loved. His recovery will take months and will not be easy but this boy is getting the best we can offer and the love is free!


ELIZA



Eliza found herself as a young pup abandoned in a small and remote shelter in the inland desert area. She was quickly adopted and even more quickly returned. The family took her to their veterinarian for her spay surgery and found a heart murmur. Upon telling the family, they knew they were not in a position to provide her the care she would need to live. The shelter deemed her 'un-adoptable' and were going to let her go - words that tore into our hearts. In a last ditch effort a shelter volunteer made one last call to Labs & More. Within hours our volunteer was on the road to the shelter over 3 hours away to give this girl her only chance.

Eliza had her visit at the Vet Specialty Hospital where we soon learned her prognosis. Sadly this beautiful and spirited girl was born with sub-aortic stenosis, where she will be in constant danger of heart failure and her life will continue to be day-to-day. Even though this severe condition cannot be surgically corrected we are working with our vets to manage her life with medicine and care. With your help we are determined to give her quality of life and not be sad about her time. We are hopeful that with medical maintenance and a patient, loving pet parent she may experience a normal, loving and warm home of her own.
