When my dad was a little kid, he contracted a kidney infection from that dirty bastard, Lake Michigan. At the time, this sort of infection was a death sentence. He spent a year living at La Rabida among other chronic or terminally ill children, his parents only able to visit once a week. Through the hard work of the doctors and nurses, he was able to recover enough to return home, with a caveat: they estimated that the damage done to his kidneys meant he would only make it to 18. Thankfully, he was able to double that, marry my mom, and have me. Help

me give that same opportunity to other kids.

La Rabida Children’s Hospital is dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality of life for each of our patients with complex conditions, disabilities, and chronic illness. The only hospital of its kind in Chicago, La Rabida provides a place of hope for all children with lifelong medical conditions. Our mission to serve patients regardless of their families' ability to pay remains the same. No child is ever turned away due to financial circumstances.

La Rabida Children's Hospital (http://www.larabida.org/) is a resource upon which Chicago's families have depended -- and the world's kindhearted have supported -- since 1896. Their mission to provide care to children with lifelong medical conditions regardless of their family's ability to pay has been unwavering. Today, La Rabida serves approximately 7,500 children annually who require primary and specialty care to address complex and challenging medical conditions. Services and programs include treatment for chronic illnesses such asthma, diabetes, and sickle cell disease, and developmental disabilities through both inpatient and outpatient care. In addition, La Rabida specializes in the treatment of children who have been abused, neglected or experienced trauma.

When a child or teen is diagnosed with a serious illness, families and parents will face and need to cope with many challenges. One of those challenges is balancing medical bills with the ability to afford adequate school supplies for their sick child.   Most children see school as more than just a place for learning; it’s also a place for fun and friendship.  Thus, when a sick child returns to school it's just as much about the healing process as it is about the education.  

This year, Guardian's Chicago / Milwaukee group sales office is lending a helping hand in La Rabida's fundraising efforts to provide school supplies to their patients.  From June 1st until July 31st, please help Guardian reach our goal of raising $10,000.  The funds will be used to purchase backpacks and school supplies for La Rabida's pre-K through 12th grade patients.
