Despite the relentless attacks from the invaders, health care in Ukraine has not collapsed. The dedication of health care workers has saved many thousands of lives. However, a combination of the war and of an economic collapse spurred by wartime destruction and the neoliberal policies of the Ukrainian government (accelerated by the demands of US and European financial capital) mean that nurses and doctors are working without essential equipment.

On the heels of a several successful GFM campaigns (Drinking water for Mykolaiv, Generators for Ukraine workers), Kryla NGO is raising funds to purchase the machine to conduct essential blood tests and cell counts. These are standard items of equipment in most health care facilities. They provide accurate and rapid detection of life-threatening and other infections, as well as of many serious conditions such as liver and kidney disease or heart-related problems. In the absence of these machines, nurses spend many hours conducting analyses by hand that the machines can do in a few minutes with fewer errors. This also means the nurses cannot attend to patients' needs.

More specifically, at the request of the nurses' union, we will purchase the Fully Automatic Biochemistry Analyzer for the Mykola Halytskyi Nizhyn Central City Hospital in a city in Chernihiv Oblast, approximately 60 miles from the Russian border.

Why Nizhyn Hospital Needs Your Help

The Mykola Halytskyi Nizhyn Central City Hospital is a vital healthcare hub serving the entire Nizhyn district. Founded in 1894, this historic facility has become a crucial multidisciplinary medical center with departments spanning surgical, neurological, trauma, cardiac, pediatric, maternity, and many other specialties.

As a cluster hospital for the region, it provides round-the-clock care to approximately 500 patients daily. However, like many state-run Ukrainian hospitals, it lacks modern equipment needed to deliver proper care during wartime.

"We are using an old analyzer that can perform only 20–40 tests per hour. Sometimes it breaks down—tests have to be redone. It also frequently needs repairs, which all adds up to wasted time," explains Ivan Korosko, General Director of Nizhyn Hospital. "Every day, about 500 patients receive care at our hospital. There are emergency cases when a high-quality analysis is needed immediately. In those situations, we have to send patients to private laboratories so that the doctor can make an accurate diagnosis."

About the Equipment

The НТІ BioChem FC-360 is a high-throughput automatic biochemistry analyzer that can process. This machine represents a 10-20x increase in capacity over their current equipment, dramatically reducing wait times for critical test results.

These brave workers, many of whom have three or more children or disabled family members, are in urgent need of support to withstand the challenges of daily life amidst wartime power shortages.

Why Generators? These attacks will displace an additional half a million people, adding to the 10 million already displaced by the war. Critical systems, such as water distribution and education, have also been severely disrupted.

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army has disrupted the supply of drinking water to the city of Mykolaiv. The water available in residents' faucets is too salty, making it unsuitable for drinking and cooking. Currently, the people of Mykolaiv are forced to stand in line for hours daily, risking their lives as Russian military bombardments continue, just to fill bottles of drinking water from street sources.

In response to this crisis, we have partnered with Ukrainian volunteers on the ground to raise funds for an industrial-scale Ecosoft reverse osmosis system. This system will provide clean drinking water to up to 300 families daily, significantly improving their quality of life and reducing the risks they face.

The total cost of the system is $8,500. Thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian volunteers, $3,500 has already been collected. We are seeking your support to raise the remaining $5,000 needed to purchase and install this life-saving system.
