Konohiki Restoration Project ~Aloha~ Fundraiser
Aloha Kakou,
On the behalf of The Konohiki Restoration Project and the 'Ohana, we would like to send a big Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa for all the united efforts and achievements we accomplished together for our precious island community. The past year has been a unique challenge for us all with issues ranging from: facing the pandemic, ongoing natural disasters, the Hanalei landslide road closure / convoy, continuous restricted access to sacred lands and finally the ongoing desecrations of our Kupuna Iwi across the island. In spite of the circumstances, we still continue to malama 'aina, aloha our families / community and be active as Kia'i. Within the guidelines and restrictions due to COVID 19, we were still able to gather for special issues directly regarding our culture, lifestyle and ahupua'a system. In gathering, our organization and close community members showed up with pule and traditional protocols for all situations, thus creating solutions and opportunities to work together making things pono for the lahui and our island home of Kaua'i .
Over the past year not only did we grow stronger as an organization, we achieved a few goals. Here is a list and review of our major accomplishments :
- Purchased a mini tractor to kokua / help our families needing assistance on the land and clearing invasive grasses
- Established an educational, cultural based curriculum, stylized as a workbook series, that will serve as a guide and foundation to our future Wa’a (canoe) water based programs. In our first workbook we cover the importance of the ancient Ahupua'a (Land /Ocean Management) system and the relationship shared between ‘aina (land), ka’i (ocean) and wakea (sky), all the while, teaching scientific monitoring and data collection skills. We will be using the watersheds of Kaua'i as the classroom and malama 'aina as the foundation of our mission to educate and inspire the many generations of our community. As we bridge Native values with the academic approach of science, we are better able to make progress for sustaining a healthy planet and nurturing the diversity of ecosystems of our 'aina.
- Donated food and emergency supplies to those in need after floods and disastrous storm systems
- Donated food and assistance for Kia'i crews involved in various efforts of clean up and documenting desecrations of sacred sites and watersheds
- Hosted, participated and presented in an array of zoom conferences for networking Kia'i / activists and other educators of native Hawaiian practices throughout the island chain. Our goal is to further network and connect with sustainable cultural practitioners around the world.
- Protected ancient Kupuna Iwi from being removed where they were meant to rest in peace. A local article covering one specific situation we faced in the spring: Garden Island Hanalei Iwi Discovery
- KRP hosts monthly multigenerational Ahupua'a restoration workdays. These work days are built to gather the families from different regions of Kaua’i to create unique malama ‘aina activities that further engage the Kaua’i community at large. The main focus is repairing our native connections with traditional protocols, pertaining directly to the health of our land and the watershed ecosystems of Hawai’i.
So that we may continue to prosper as an organization, we humbly ask for your support and donations, as your contributions will allow us to carry on our mission and serve our island community.
** This GoFundMe is our first official online fundraiser event. As part of participating in our fund we will be updating you with various content and information about future Konohiki Restoration Project Events.
