Chad's South Bay Ironman (140.6)
On April 24th, I will be attempting to complete my first Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and 26.2 mile run) in support of Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) Los Angeles. KEEN empowers the youth with disabilities by providing free exercise programs to promote fitness and fun, led by volunteer coaches. I believe that sports are a metaphor for life. The truth is, everyone is struggling with something. Sports empower us with confidence to face life's obstacles head on. It shows that the only limits are those that we define for ourselves. Most importantly, it connects us through teamwork and community, showing that we are stronger as a group than as individuals.
Ironman triathlon exemplifies exactly that and is what quickly drew me to endurance sports. I am hoping that my suffering, though negligible in comparison to those suffering with disabilities, will inspire those to take on their own challenges in life.
The Ironman is planned to take place in the South Bay (Beach Cities) of Los Angeles, CA. The swim will start near the iconic Tower 26 in Santa Monica. After completing the swim, I will ride north bound along PCH past Point Mugu with a loop around Camarillo before heading back. After finishing the bike portion in Santa Monica, I will be running the marathon south bound to the finish in Redondo Beach. The triathlon will be posted on Strava @ChadBykerk.
