Let’s Keep Play in the Park Going
Play in the Park is a neighborhood movement in Kennedy Heights and Pleasant Ridge that enriches community by maximizing the use of our parks and reclaiming these natural settings as safe places to connect with neighbors, friends and family. We have set up this crowdfunding campaign so that all of us can work together to keep Play in the Park going. This is particularly important as some foundations support 'start-up' programs but not ongoing operations. Also, foundations like to see programs that are supported by individuals in the community. We are asking that everyone consider making a donation - in an amount of their choosing - so that collectively we can reach our goal of $3,000.
After beginning as a response to violence that occurred in Kennedy Heights Park in 2013, Play in the Park is now in its 7th season. When thirty committed neighbors and a Cincinnati Police Department community safety officer gathered to play games, lead nature hikes and enjoy popsicles in the park back in 2013 no one imagined it would grow to a weekly attendance averaging 225 persons and reaching over 1,500 children and adults in a season.
Play in the Park made a commitment to reclaim the park for its intended use and has evolved to provide weekly summertime activities appealing to every segment of our diverse community focusing on positive interactions, building relationships of trust and meeting new friends. Play in the Park has been successful at engaging neighbors across social and racial domains, eliminating barriers and ensuring everyone is welcome and safe in their neighborhood park. And the entire program has been free of charge thanks to generous donations from community councils, foundations, companies and individuals.
Play in the Park’s unique service to the community has been recognized with a Community Connections Innovation Award by the City of Cincinnati and Seasongood Good Government Foundation and also highlighted in The Cincinnati Enquirer, "Neighborhoods Make Park a Model of Fighting Violence".
We want to continue the momentum of Play in the Park's impact in our neighborhoods. To that end we are deeply compelled to keep these experiences free of charge to all neighbors by continuously engaging new funding partners and new donors. New funding allows us to make great programming like Madcap Puppets, Newport Aquarium, Zak Morgan and Sunrock Farm accessible to all by bringing them directly to our community and serving them up in the setting of our neighborhood park.
