Eight years ago, Rookie came into our lives. Born and raised on the streets of San Jose, he was a feral cat—unsocialized and wary of humans. A volunteer at The Dancing Cat quickly realized that Rookie was too gentle to survive if released back outside.

Thankfully, The Dancing Cat—a wonderful nonprofit that specializes in finding homes for cats who are often overlooked, including ferals, seniors, and those with health challenges—stepped in to help. They gave Rookie a second chance, welcoming him into their cozy adoption lounge where people can meet and connect with cats in need. We visited in May 2018 and instantly fell in love with our little orange tiger. The rest is history.

Il y a huit ans, Rookie est entré dans nos vies. Né et élevé dans les rues de San Jose, c'était un chat sauvage — non socialisé et méfiant envers les humains. Une bénévole de The Dancing Cat a rapidement compris que Rookie était trop doux pour survivre s'il était relâché dehors.

This is the organization that I've been fostering for ever since I moved to California (I am on foster cat #4 haha). They are incredible humans that do the work near and dear to cat lovers and animal fans alike.

The Dancing Cat runs on donations. They did not meet their goals and have had to make the following changes:

1. the Lounge will be closed to the public 4x per week: way less eyeballs on adorable cats who need a home

2. Critical roles have been eliminated: those responsible for finding adopters who open up space at the lounge for new cats

3. Foster Coordinators: those who take care of the awesome humans who are fostering cats so they have a temporary loving home until they go to their furever home!

PLEASE consider donating. ANYTHING helps. $5 (a cup of coffee) or $500 (remember that charity donations are tax deductible )

The Dancing Cat, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a cat adoption lounge located near downtown San José, California. The Dancing Cat’s mission is to find homes for at-risk adult cats from the San José Animal Care Center by giving those cats an open, cage-free environment in which they can mingle with people and other felines.

Vision

The Dancing Cat is a place where cats roam in a comfortable, safe environment. A place where people interact with the resident cats and each other. For those looking to adopt, it provides an opportunity to meet the resident cats and see the cats’ personalities in an environment outside a shelter, where they may be scared and not ready to engage with people. Other visitors, who might not be able to adopt due to allergies or living situations, might simply want to enjoy feline company in a relaxed space.
